Buzz Billsberry Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 I have received this from a reliable source Speed Cameras M6/M56/M60/M62 The new electronic signs on the M6 were switched on this Tuesday. The bad news is that they are rigged with the SPECS speed cameras. This probably applies to all the new signs being installed on the M62, M60 and M56. SPECS is a computer-camera based system. As you go past the sign a digital camera reads your number plate. When you go past the next sign your number plate is read again. The computer 'knows' how far apart the signs are so it can work out your average speed between the two, or three or four. The system is fully automatic and will issue a ticket without any form of human intervention. It does this for every single vehicle that passes. You will not know you have been caught as the cameras don't flash. They work 24/7, 365 days a year, and theoretically, there's absolutely no limit on the number of tickets that the system can issue. The whole section of the M6 between Knutsford and Preston is wired, both ways. The system is set to trigger a ticket at 78MPH. (Don't take this as A guarantee) Radar detectors will be of no use as SPECS is entirely passive, there is no laser beam to detect. Be warned and spread the news! Regards Buzz Quote
adhawkins Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 This might not be true. There was a similar rumour about the new signs on the M4 around Newbury and Reading. The police have since denied that these signs are fitted with SPECS cameras (the cameras on them are simply for monitoring traffic flow). Not saying your source isn't reliable, but there may not be too much cause for concern. Andy Quote

terryb Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 The SPECS cameras at M60/62 Junction 18 were there during roadworks - now removed There are SPECS cameras on Thelwall Viaduct during roadworks It is my understanding that, apart from roadworks, there are no speed cameras on Motorways - read this in an article on Speed Checks Quote
Blatman Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 I'm with Andy. The text looks word for word identical to the recent M4 Scamera e-mail that was doing the rounds recently. Check with plod, 'cos the M4 one was definitely a hoax......... Quote
Tony B Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 its exactly the same as the M4 one, intended to fill up the internet with inane crap... coz most people are gullible Quote

adhawkins Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 Me thinks adhawkins could be right It happens. I'm used to it by now Andy Quote
Stuart Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 This was circulated at work by e-mail on friday, and I told everyone that I thought it was crap because I also saw the M4 one, and the wording is identical. Motorways are our safest roads, and I think they know there would be a real outcry if they stuck cameras on them - no justification other than cash. What makes people take the time to put this sort of thing out, though? Life's too short.... Quote
ACW Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 Hmmm.... bit worried on this one as I noticed on Saturday night that the 'SPECS' type cameras on the M6 roadworks seem to have recently been fitted with red banners behind them. (I dont recall these been there before). This would of course be necesary if they were to be used as speed cameras..... anyways dont get me started on speed cameras.... Quote
Mark Stanton Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 anyways dont get me started on speed cameras.... Seems you have something to get of your chest Mr Wot ..... Quote
mark.anson Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 This thing about the camera IS a rumour. The only cameras are the ones in the road works on the Thelwall viaduct,(apart from the fixed cameras that are obvious anyway). The only other cameras are for traffic flow etc.The speed cameras have to have a large yellow square behind them as well. There are no cameras hidden in digital signs etc and if there are they are not speed cameras. Dont ask me how I know.Draw your own conclusions. Quote
