Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 AP is a big company and the AP Racing division is a separate and very different entity Withington the overall group! It does cause confusion though. Quote
Skypeller Posted October 10, 2018 Author Posted October 10, 2018 Had a look today. My master cylinder is an AP. Are the standard ones AP or is it likely uprated? also does anybody know what car these are from for future reference Quote
DE04* Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Yes mine is also an ap but I don't think they are the upgraded ap racing ones. 1 Quote
6carjon Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Yes my standard one is Ap also. It's not ap racing just standard ap. It still works fine as my earlier post 1 Quote
Skypeller Posted October 15, 2018 Author Posted October 15, 2018 So, I’m about to fit my calipers and just wanted to know the answers to a few things I tried calling Hispec who are going to call me back (think it’s a bit late in the day though), the calipers inside face is damn close to the outer surface of the disc see photos below, also with both pads fully home (pistons retracted all the way as come out of the box) the one pad (inner) is slightly closer than the outer ... not a problem if this centralises once bled and both pads back off equal amounts otherwise when I stamp on the brakes the one pad with contact the first albeit not with much pressure as the oil will flow to force the other side over.... and- do you bleed both sides of the Caliper one at a time or inside pistons bled first followed by the outer side pistons .... sorry it’s probably really obvious stuff to you guys but I’ve only had conventional calipers before now thanks j Quote
DE04* Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Calipers looks ok,if you can spin the disk and it's not touching the calipers that's ok. I think the pads will be ok after you have bled them all up. Start furthest away so N/S/R outer first then the inner then O/S/R outer then inner. N/S/F outer then inner then O/S/F outer then inner. I bleed twice then use on the road for a few weeks then bleed again to get all the micro bubbles out. Hope this makes sense. 1 Quote
CosKev Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 As above regards clearance and the pads I would derust that disc whilst you are fiddling about with wheel off and give it a thin coat of paint 1 Quote
GaryH Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Just had the brakes on my car apart, for discs (new grooved) and pads (mintex1144) clearance is about the same as your car before and after and it's been fine. 1 Quote
Crash test dummy Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Can you measure the clearance between the outer circumference of the disc and the caliper with a feeler gauge? If it really is as close as the picture suggests then it might be a bit tight but as CosKev suggests de-rusting might do the job. It's surprising how much a disc will expand when it gets hot. You can probably centralise the caliper on the disc with a couple of thin washers between it and the upright if it bothers you. Quote
Skypeller Posted October 16, 2018 Author Posted October 16, 2018 Hi @GaryH where did you source your discs? What car are they from? I have a feeling they’re escort mk3 discs but can’t recall without checking my notes in the Westy file. I decided to skip on shimming and the rust in picture is really nothing, quick scotch bright up and no more rubbing Quote
GaryH Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Hi Jody, From Luke at Playskool motorsport. One of the club suppliers, no need to worry about which disc you need, clear advice, competitive price, really quick delivery all round a good person to deal with. Gary Quote
Geoffrey Carter (Buttercup) Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 ^^^ What Gary said. Quote
