Committee boosting their like count..?

Recommended Posts

We were told that the ability to like a post would slowly come back on line as the index got it's shizzle sorted out or something like that.

And I'm not technically minded so I accepted this in good faith.

But now I think I've noticed a pattern, it seems the only members whose posts you can like are Committee members :o..!

Now in the old days of Scott's brutal and despotic rule I would have expected this blatant rigging of the democratic process.

I dont blame our webmasters, they are obviously acting under orders and are possibly in fear of their lives.

Oh @Andy Banks - Chairman, did you have to extinguish my hope of a new beginning so quickly ...

It's a conspiracy!

Seriously though, I am aware of the "like" issue and will try and remedy it asap. It's to do with the custom membership script that the previous webmaster wrote, basically it needs updating to work with the latest forum software update.

on the case (you may "like" this) :d

Why do we care? This isn't Facebook.

Isn't "liking" a symptom of the modern mediocrity mentioned in the common sense thread? Without informed, reasoned dissent to provoke deeper thinking we're definitely on the fast-track to idiocracy.

Why are they mutually exclusive? Unless of course you're suggesting to like one thing is to like everything?

Surely being shown appreciation is what helps people rise above mere mediocrity, and to remove such things leads to the very non-competitive policy's that help level the field.

OK found the 'like' (heart) and 4 other options -- but no 'dislike' :getmecoat:

I am with you in so many ways, there is a definite overuse / predominantly auto liking mentality that appears as an " I've read it, I've read it - look at me " desperation for inclusion.

My philosophy is to 'like' etc as an exception! Only to those things that are above the 'mediocrity idiocracy', as you put it, imo  (which of course may not allign with others opinions)

This forum isn't Farcebook, and long may it not be so, but I am for liking liking etc!

My point is people might only write things to be liked. Informed, even ill-informed dissent widens horizons. Liking dissent of course is just fine but I don't think that the coming generations really see it like that. Most important (it seems to me) is friend count and being liked. Honest disagreement will necessarily take a back seat as it won't be liked, or won't be liked as much.

I like to use extreme examples so... 50 years ago it was a criminal offence punishable by time inside for being homosexual. If there was no dissent, where would we be now?

And lets face it my posting history would be very different if I only wrote things in the hope of being liked. Look how I poked the bear last night by outing some unmentionables

Not read this thread in depth - not got time to gauge the "tone" here - but just to point out that the new "reactions" system is part of the latest forum software update.

It can easily be reverted to the old one where you could just "like" a post rather than "react" with different "emotions"

Not a difficult one.  If you don't like the "Like" system, ignore it.  Amazingly, the world will carry on as usual.  Personally, I like the update, adds four extra layers to it to make it more expressive, particularly the tears one where you can publicly and quickly tell the poster you disapprove of their post.  I say keep it. :t-up:

There's every difference in the world between difference of opinion written respecting the views of all parties, and difference of opinion written as heated arguments, bickering, abuse and name calling where the person who shouts loudest and last thinks they win.  The first one is what mature adults do.  The second one is what immature children do in playgrounds.

These forums, particularly the Stuff & Nonsense, is a far, far better place then it was a number of years ago when a few "characters" had nothing better to do than deliberately stir up trouble and ill-feeling, then protest their innocence when they went too far and had their leash chains yanked.  What those characters never saw, or chose to see, was the vast number of members who read that rubbish and were put off from contributing anything at all, which made the collective poorer and less knowledgeable.

Perhaps it's partly a question of getting older and wiser.  No doubt I've posted some pretty asinine and idiotic things in here in the past, which I now regret.  But surely it is up to us to set an example by our own actions and by doing so, encourage new members to join and contribute.

My opinion is that this club's forums are fantastic as they are.  If I want to go somewhere to get upset from gross stupidity or have an utterly pointless argument, I'll watch Eastenders, read the Daily Mail, or scroll through the comments on any YouTube video.  At least in here, we now have a place where intelligent debate with respect takes place as the rule rather than the exception.  Be gone and never return, bad old days.
