New engines do burn more  oil than usual.  When the engine is has done a couple of thousand miles and everything is bedded in nicely,  oil consumption does decrease significantly, same goes for fuel consumption.

If you have  an Audi 2.0TSI engine forget the above info.

Funny - but my new (well, 2004 unused) crate Zetec hasn't used a drop from new (other than when I deliberately 'drop' it that is!)

Ah yes, there's always some exceptions.

Would that have been bench/dyno run though when built? Or do they just assemble them and chuck them in a crate? :)

Ref the fitting of a low oil pressure warning light it's usually too late once that comes on anyway, the damage is done.

The only warning system that will let you know the oil needs a top up/is getting used etc is a oil level sensor in the sump.

Very few car engines have these fitted.

No idea. But my run in technique is far from gentle!

It probably would have had a hot test in the engine plant, but that's a really quick power test, not to bed in. Zetec engines don't use much oil in my experience...

Well the race line sump max is about 5mm higher than the ford mark.   And if the sump is significantly less volume it's better to over fill a little than have to little. Plus on kit cars the engine might not be angled the same as on the donor ... a lot of variables to just assume the dipstick possibly of unknown origin in a modified tube will give the correct oil level.

Fitted a Raceline sump to my new blacktop zetec engine and was told by Chris and Pete from Raceline to fill with five litres of oil.
