Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Think I'm starting to loose the will... After having to SORN the car for the past few months, (almost unheard of me), I finally re-taxed it last weekend, insurance renewal was last Thursday, so thought I'd grab an hour and try and find some mojo again. Car started beautifully first time after two and a bit months, headed out towards the petrol station and got a mile or so before starting to run rough. Nursed it to the petrol station, by now, 2000 rpm idle, and very strange running, sometimes clearing above 3500 rpm or so, other times all over the place. Get to the petrol station, b*****k*, the bl**** cap won't unlock. Give up after five minutes, as I didn't want to snap the key off in the lock. Limp home still rough as ****, but not deteriorating. Feels almost like running with a cylinder down, but not. (As in not the power loss with only running on three). Look under the bonnet once home. For gods sake, the bl**** adjuster spring and bolt off one throttle body, (that links to the main body) is completely missing. So although the bodies are sort of linked together, the linkage on one pair has to move 5mm or so before it starts moving the lead body. So, game over for the weekend until I can speak to Omex on Monday and get a replacement. Now just to get the damn petrol cap unlocked. 1 Quote
TableLeg Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Sorry to hear that Dave, Hope you get it fixed soon. Quote
Thrustyjust Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I think we have been there with frustration of getting out for the first time Dave. Dont tell anyone, but I havent locked my fuel cap Shhhhhhh. What I must do is a spot of oil again on the ignition barrel, as sometimes it takes quite a push to get the key in. As for missing bolts on the throttle body, thats not great news and when you get the bits , then loctite a tiny bit. On another note Dave. When you speak to Omex, can you ask them when you turn the ignition, does the throttle potentiometer zero , when ignition is on, everytime to start the car. Just trying to nail down my slight roughness at cold start. Quote
CraigHew Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I never lock my petrol cap either. Don't see the need as it's always parked fairly safe. Saves faffin about for keys Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 11, 2017 Author Posted March 11, 2017 A wee bit of WD40 has free'd the lock off. It did do it once before, if I'm honest. I stopped locking it for over a year, and had only just started again, doh! I will add a tiny bit of Loctite to the adjuster, I can't add too much, or it won't be an adjuster anymore I'll also take the air filter back plate off next time so that I can get at the adjuster and it's lock nut more easily; it had felt tight after the last setting up of the TB's but access was a pig, even using a cut down Allen key and specially bought "slim" spanner. I'm wondering if a thread had galled slightly, making it feel tight, when actually there was perhaps some play in it. So annoying when it started so beautifully after two and a bit months, right on the key. I thought the TPS was self resetting with Omex, but I'm not convinced it is on the S2000 set up. It can deffinately be "out". - When I was changing my throttle cable, I did a lot of testing, both from the pedal and moving the ITB end linkage by hand. Afterwards idle was a little rough initially after starting. When I looked at the laptop, the raw TPS figure was reading 25 when the ecu was expecting 24, I adjusted the idle screw down a tad to bring it back to 24 and it ran perfectly afterwards. Quote
Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 @Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - WSCC AO Rep sorry to hear about your bad luck today! @Thrustyjust Our Omex Ecu doesn't self calibrate every ignition on, sorry. Part of the throttle body set up sheet involves calibrating the full open and fully closed throttle values for the ECU. Quote

I just wonder on all engines being different from initial set up, how it makes a zero read and a 100 % for potentiometer settings. If I changed my throttle body for the a large bore one and need to reuse my potentiometer, how this is set up without unlocking the ecu to set data points for zero and WOT. I know from finding out, the Honda S2000 info, the throttle pot needs to be manually adjusted to a specific reading , via the Honda ECU , which I obviously cant change . My Elise, you used to turn the ignition on and off and on, push throttle to floor and foot off , then ignition off would set these parameters simply. I wonder if I can take an ohms reading from the throttle pot and then reset it at the same reading when swopped etc ? Not that I am , just interested , to be honest. Quote
Sparkymart Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 Dave a small bit of your favourite nail varnish on the last couple of threads works well and will come apart a lot easier than loctite 1 Quote

Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 13, 2017 Author Posted March 13, 2017 Well, a quick call to Omex, and I should have the replacement bits posted out today. 1 Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 14, 2017 Author Posted March 14, 2017 And true to their word, a Jiffy bag with three remarkably important tiny little bits in arrived in today's post! Great service from Omex! 1 Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 14, 2017 Author Posted March 14, 2017 Just grabbed a quick twenty minutes after getting back, and fitted the new balance screw assembly, complete with sparkly black nail polish - substitute (a light strength thread lock for panel screws etc). I took the filter backplate off this time around for ease of access and to make sure the adjuster was properly tight. If this one comes adrift, then the problem is deeper than just not being tight enough last time. 3 Quote
