From my own experience your best to buy the best Spec'd car you can afford as Upgradeitus costs a fortune.      I could have bought a similar spec'd car to what I now have, for less than it has cost me.  Even though I have done all the spannering myself

Hi All,

Just a word of warning for future newbie buyers. Please add checking the fuel tank to your list of checks, as mine leaks and may be a bit of a job sorting it out. More to the point I'm not allowed to keep it in the garage as it stinks and the smell is drifting into the house.

I have taken the roll bar and boot box off to be able to see the tank and will clean tonight to identify the cause of the leak. I have however been advised by someone in the know that you can't seal a leak on a tank as it would fail an MOT, so I may need a new tank....Grrr

"Can't seal tank for MOT". That sounds like a half truth at best. Certainly repaired tanks have passed before now, whether there are any limitations on what constitutes a repair I couldn't say, I've never looked.

Is it definitely the tank? Or could it be hoses in the same area. Modern ethanol blends in fuel can cause issues for some older hose types.

As above no issues with welding alloy tanks and MOT'S.

Fingers crossed as Dave said it will be a hose.

Hoping you've been underneath the back of the car and checked the hoses before removing the rollbar etc?

Could well have wasted a good few hours!

Now have 'glue-gun' sealed around the pump as a temporary for mastic.

Time will tell
