Quinten Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Oh, I do love a pun Inspired by a feature on Tom's (see this thread) old car and a desire to get rid of the ugly chrome headlights and indicators I got my Dremel out again. Starting off with a little cardboard template to see how it would assemble (and look) together. Still had some left over carbon from Julian so taped it off and transferred the template on to it. A quick cut, sand and drill. Et voila! 1 Quote
jim_l Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Headlamp bracket looks very close to the wishbone - should there be a spacer in there to stop them making contact? Se the sketch from the build manual in my gallery. Jim. 1 Quote

Se the sketch from the build manual in my gallery. Jim. I have no idea if there needs to be a spacer, but I can tell you that I looked at the wishbone and thought, this can't be right?!? There is an indentation in the wishbone where it has been caught by the bracket... I'll have a look at your sketch Quote
jim_l Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 If the wishbone is dented the answer is yes then - there should be a spacer - just a bundle of washers on mine, but a good 10 or 12mm maybe more. Jim Quote
Quinten Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 The sketch isn't all too clear, but I can see now that it should be needed. Hopefully I can get the nuts off after 17 years... Quote
jim_l Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Agree the sketch alone isn't that clear but I think the spacer is part of the supplied kit and the build manual does draw attention to it. Quote
Kingster Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 You can just make it out on this pic (link to hi res img) Quote
Quinten Posted May 22, 2015 Author Posted May 22, 2015 You can just make it out on this pic (link to hi res img) Yeah, quite clear actually, thanks for that. Won't have such spacers in the garage, so may have to 'botch' it with several washers instead. Don't know how much thread there is left on the bolt, so will find out tonight if I can fix it this weekend, or postpone for another day. Quote
Lyonspride Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Are those DRLs (white) or indicators (amber)? I ask because they look like the single high power LED units I bought to use as DRLs (to help with visibility, without needing headlights on all day). The only thing i'll say is I had mine connected up for testing (on a small 12v SLA), first just the LED, which (after about 30 mins) reached a temperature of 90°C, filled the living room with a horrible smell and burned a small hole in my carpet (which the missus hasn't noticed yet ). Not my finest hour!!!!! The second one, I put through a 3mm thick piece of aluminium (as a heat sink), it reached 40°C, but after about 2 hours it went dull and was barely emitting any light at all, even on another fully charged battery They look good though and they're really cheap, so I would perhaps buy several pairs to keep as a backup, just in case for some reason they become hard to get or even obsolete. Quinten Posted May 22, 2015 Author Posted May 22, 2015 They are indicators. Tested one side yesterday and they are nice and bright. I've got some other plans for DRL's, but that's not until later Quote
Lyonspride Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Nice, I'd been toying with the idea of using the same ones as side indicators, positioning them to reflect off the cycle wings, effectively turning the whole cycle wing into an indicator Can't really change my front indicators, as i'd have to fill in the holes/cracks where the current ones are and I highly doubt I could ever get a gelcoat match Quote

alexander72 Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 my wish bones are bent where they hi the light bracket - must be my svelte figure 1 Quote
Quinten Posted May 22, 2015 Author Posted May 22, 2015 Oh, if only things were easy... Does anyone know 1) what bolt (unf/metric?) size/length it should be? 2) can the nuts be re-used or do they need to be renewed (nyloc?) ? 3) where I can get those thick washers? 4) can I replace this with the car on the ground, or does it need to be in the air, or what? Had planned to do it this weekend, but without parts, etc, it's going to be postponed to the near future... Quote
