IDIOTIC CHANGE TO CAR HIRE RULES

Recommended Posts

Just heard a news item on radio 4 saying that from June this year the paper part of your driving licence is going to be abolished. If you need to hire a card while abroad then you need to go online to DVLA and generate a code which lasts for  only 72 hrs so if you are already on hols in middle of stay you need somehow get online ?? Good thinking DVLA!

You seem surprised by the lack of thinking applied to this piece of red tape cutting legislation which in turn creates red tape.

I'm sure Labour will be better... Hmmm me neither

Read about this earlier madness, but if it stops idiot kids hiring a car abroad on a whim then all the better.

It's to allow live licence verification to prevent people having a spare counter part that's free of convictions. The 72 hour period is going to have to be extended as it's just not practical in many ways. I work in driver and operator compliance and the new system has good and bad points. It will be of benefits to all fleets, it's just a case of using the correct method to manage it. It should cut down on the number of drivers on the road without licences or not driving in accordance with their licence.

One of the most annoying aspects is the lack of publicity that has been given to the changes, it's been known that the changes take affect from June 8th for at least 7 months but as usual the government via DVSA has not got the message out there. Time will tell how it pans out but it will need some tweaking to be fully operational.

I've hired cars in Europe and the USA, and have never been asked for the paper bit!

Apparently if you cant generate a code you can ring the DVLA on their expensive line ( £3 per minute) and talk to someone.........but its not a 24 hr service!! I don't want to go on holiday and find out that I cant hire a car due to some cocked up bureaucracy

I cant see how the paper part of the licence was an issue and not sure that kids hiring a car abroad are a major problem.

Just don't go on holiday Terry, easy fix ;)

I've never been asked for a paper counterpart in any foreign country although in Russia I needed an international driving licence but you can get them from a post office and it lasts a year.

Me too. Though if I open it out too many times now, I'll probably have four paper parts.

Same here. The chap on the Alamo desk in Florida looked at my like I was a bit odd when I asked if he wanted the paper counterpart. It has now been destroyed and certainly won't be missed by me.

If you have trouble hiring a car abroad after this change, then there is this solution.
