Another differential question...

Lotus7racer

Recommended Posts

Alright,I bought a differential that has a 3.3 gear ratio used

by the XR4Ti in the U.S. Since my current Sierra diff has 3.6,

I would like to use the XR4Ti gear for turbo hayabusa powerplant.

I noticed that the Xr4ti are exactly identical but where you

bolt the axle is different. My Sierra diff is spline type hook-up

and the Xr4Ti has 6 bolts to be fasten to the differential stub.

If I take the stub out from  the Xr4Ti diff, can I use my spline

type axle?

Thanks

Jaime

Are you sure the XR4Ti diff and the Sierra one are the same ?

I think you'll find that the XR4Ti diff is what we would normally refer to as a Cosworth diff in the UK, and the Sierra one as a 7" diff.

And when you say "splined type hook up" for the Sierra diff, do you mean that there is a tripod type ball and socket arrangement which sits in the diff flanges ?

If so then I'm pretty sure the two aren't interchangable without other bits being changed too.

If you can take any pictures (of both diffs) it would be very useful.

Ok  here is the picture.

http://www.mjmturbos.com/xr4tidiff.htm

Can someone verify whether I got a sierra diff or Cosworth

diff. Also I need to know if this is 7" or 7 1/2.

Notice the xr4ti axle stub (axle has to be bolted). Look like mine is a spline insert type rather than fasten by bolts.

My plan is to buy a quaife and disassemble the Xr4Ti with 3.3

ratio and install it to the quaife.

Can I take the xr4ti stub out so I can use my insert spline type axle after the conversion to quaife?

Thanks guys

Jaime

Well, I dont know whether this will help or not, but your new one (3.3) looks like the one 'normally' fitted to Westfields (over in Blighty at least). You would have to change your drive shafts, and possibly hubs as well, to get this one to fit. Interestingly the one fitted to your car isnt an option AFAIK here, or at least with that type driveshaft.

To tell if you have a 7 or 7.5 inch diff, measure the distance between the top mounting bolt holes on the diff casing.

As a matter of interest, is your car disk brakes on the back or drums?

Stu999  thanks...appreciate you helping me.

You mean to say that my current diff is 3.3?

If it is then, can I buy quaife and use all the internal gear

from my current one?

I will forget about the xr4ti if its true that my curr diff is 3.3

Woah there !!

I do believe it was you who said the diff was 3.3, not Stu !!  :D

We still haven't quite got to the bottom of identifying which diff is which, and I still think the XR4Ti diff is different to the original one.  If it measures 7 and 9/16" (or thereabouts) then it's a different diff to the normal Sierra one you have fitted.

You can, however, get Quaife internals for either diff so that shouldn't be an issue.

Ahhh, just read your first post again, and I *may* of confused you (and me!;) slightly.....

Forget the '3.3' bit, thats what I originally took your new diff to have.

Another thing to bear in mind as well (thanks Nick M from a previous thread) is that whereas later westfield chassis will accept either 7 or 7.5 inch diff, earlier ones will not, so check that the top mounting bushes are also 7.5 inches apart.
