To leave something, if kept well, that will give beauty for hundreds of years to come. Yes they did have a benefit but they provided work for people and left a legacy for their offspring and now us who wander around looking at old ruins. Near where I live, James Dyson has spent millions of his own cash restoring the home he bought and the gardens and woodland around it. He is seen as some sort of rich nunney by some and yet he too is providing work and beauty for others to see as a public foot path (the Cotswold way) goes through his land.
