Vx XE16v or Cossie Turbo?

Recommended Posts

I've been truly bitten by the 7 bug in the last 8mths and now I'm considering upgrading from the old venerable X Flow.

What are people opinions on an Vx XE 16v with approx 200bhp or a Cossie Turbo Westie?

My thoughts would be the VX engine, because the Cossie with 220lbft torque coming on song mid corner in something as light as the Westie could be a bit eye-watering!!! I certainly found my Golf 16v turbo lively when it was on boost!!

Cheers

John

If you are taliking about engine transplants, then the Vx is the thing to go for. The Cossie has exhausts and inlets on the opposite side from the crossflow, so serious hole filling/new bonnet/body work would be required.

If you're buying a new (to you) car, then  buy whichever floats your boat. I personally can see no benefit in fitting a turbo'd engine in something as light as a Westfield......but thats just my opinion.

Thanks for that Blatman.

It would be a new car to me and yes I would agree with you regarding a turbo'd Westie or similar.

Anything I should look out for re VX 16v, I've heard that porous cylinder heads are an issue, is that the case?

I've yet to see a porous cylinder head, but then I haven't seen 'em all..........

You'd be unlucky, in my opinion. Porous heads can be successfully repaired though, and at a fairly reasonable price (under £100, if memory serves) There was an article on this very subject in last months Classic Car magazine (I think....).

Vauxhall 20XE and Cossie? - Whats the difference? Both ylinder heads were designed by Cosworth so have had their magic worked on them. The first few VX heads were made by cosworth and were a better quality than the later GM cast units so were less prone to porosity problems. I guess cosworth only released their own castings after being more thoroughly inspected. I have also not seen porosity problems with the VX head (GM or COSCAST) as yet although I did know someone who experienced oil in water after and engine rebuild - reason - an oil gallery plug near the water pump wasn't sealed properly after it had been put back together. Steer clear of the later ECOTEC lump since the head design was changed to optimise emissions (valves further apart) so its tuning potential is limited.
