What daily for 20k miles a year

Covered under the disclaimer that I know all you'll get asking the internets is individual anecdotal stories rather than anything useful to make your mind up but here's my two penneth anyway ...

The Alfa Romeo I had fell apart after 60k miles. Snapped cambelt, electrical issues, engine sensors dropping like flies, turbo recon, ECU failure. It was amazing to drive when it was working but I'd steer clear of Alfas.

The current BMW 320d has got 220k miles on the clock and she's still passing MOTs. All she's needed in the 5 years I've had it is tyres and a headlamp bulb.

But then I know people who have Alfas with years of trouble free motoring and diesel BMWs eating swirl flaps and ingesting water. With any brand of car, your individual one can be a pleasure to run or an absolute lemon. Best off you make your own mind up and don't listen to me and my car stories!

My  bus the Passat is fine. I've got the £30 per year tax job 170bhp blue motion. Not bad if I say so myself. Think someones getting dual mass flywheels confused with particulate filters but never mind we know what was meant.

330d MSport is a superb car.  I had one 2008-11 and did 90,000 miles in it.  Lovely engine, 245hp and I couldn't get it below 42mpg no matter how hard i tried.

I'll stick a vote in for the XF, I currently have a 2.7d and although I am looking to replace it I'm finding it really difficult to find anything as nice and well equipped.

Just bought a cc diesel bluemotion. Went for 140 2.0 Diesel. Have seen 60mpg, £30 for 12 months VED. Luxury motoring, v happy with it

Or go for the 170 with all bells and whistles! Nicely put together motors

For performance the 330d touring is unbeatable and great economy as are the 5 series cars

My Passat estate is a great workhorse, tows well and does 50mpg on long runs ( 34mpg towing)

BMW 535d. Amazing motor, traded it in for jag xf 2.2 hated it, had it 3 months and got rid for a5 3.0d Quattro.

2.2 jag engine just wasn't good enough in my opinion, probably due to going from 3.0 twin turbo to it but I never enjoyed the jag.

The Audi is amazing

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that standard forum procedure is to get at least three pages worth of opinions and then ignore them all and buy something totally different, i.e. ask for opinions on an appropriate car to do 20k per year and then purchase a fire engine.

Wow thanks for all the input guys, although as mentioned above, I will of course ignore all of it and buy completely the wrong car...

I think I need to go have a couple of test drives and take things from there!
