What daily for 20k miles a year

Hi all. I have been toying with the idea of changing my daily driver for a while however I am stumped on what to get. Just wondering if anyone on here can think of an alternative I have managed to overlook...

So I currently do between 18k and 20k miles a year, mostly commuting. I currently have a 2011 Mondeo Titanium X Sport 2.0TDCI. The car itself is fantastic, It is almost too good which is what makes moving away from it so hard. It has all the toys, comfort and economy that I need, it's quick and reliable and being the sport, it handles nicely too. But being a proper petrol head, there is always that niggling feeling in the back of my head that perhaps there are better cars out there for the money.... By this I mean perhaps I should go for something which is maybe not quite as well rounded but has a little more soul....

Anyway, 20k is my max budget, I think it has to be diesel really and the possibility of fitting a tow bar is essential. I don't have kids etc though so 5 doors aren't necessary.

Why a diesel ?

Dearer to buy, service and fill up.....if you tow most petrol engines are ok....I tow a big caravan and find petrol fine.

Your current car WILL be very hard to better. I would look at BMW or dare I say it......Alfa Romeo. If you are doing high mileage I wouldn't worry too much about residual values, just good warranty.

My choice would be the Jag XF.  That is what I am going for next, much more comfortable that anything with a S Line or MSport badge. Levels of kit is really high for the cash.

I'm looking for a diesel purely because of my high mileage. I know there are lots of horror stories surrounding modern diesels but touch wood I haven't been effected at all.

I have just spent the evening looking at jag xfs.... the facelift 2.2 diesel just falls inside my budget at 2/3 years old. What a machine! It seems much classier than the offerings from germany too which to be honest, don't do a lot for me. I might have to take a trip down to Stratstone and have a closer look at one.

Jaguar XF's are a good looking motor but the depreciation is not so good.  Having said that the BMW 5 series cars are not as good on the depreciation front either these days.      I would have either motor.

Bit of a difference - but how about a SEAT Exeo ST 170 Sport tech. (Old shape Audi A4) but bang up to date engine.

You should get a 9 month old with less than 6000 miles for far less than your budget.

They have just stopped making them now.

Just a thought!

(I have the 140 version - brilliant for towing etc).

A twisted DMF is no fun at all, modern diesels are just not worth it.

I do similar miles and ran several Passats and always liked them, but 2 years ago fancied a change so bought a 2010 330D MSport with all the toys, for just under £20k.  As great as it is (and fast), I am now thinking of changing again, but this time I've been looking at the 5 series.

For your £20k budget, it's be quite feasible to get a 520d, with only 20 to 30k on the clock.  Plenty of SE's around with leather and satnav etc., MSports harder to come by for the money, but possible.  The 7 speed auto in them is fantastic.

Other than that, you could consider the C-Class Merc - again, good selection of low mileage C220D sports around for that money, or C250D's if you want more power / bigger engine.  Maybe even a C350D........... but they're pretty thirsty, 40mpg real world vs. 50+mpg from the 2.2.

DMF's only cause problems on short distances, no time for the DMF to burn off the collected soot.    As you are on 18 -20k miles a year this should not be a problem.  Of course the benefit of a DERV is its ability for effortless towing.

Not the same image! But I can't fault my Octavia VRS Diesel. Heard only praise for the petrol too.

A lot cheaper :)

Must be reliable as the Police have plenty of these as their Hot Pursuit weapon.      + I have always liked Skodas. I have the lesser Audi cooking version.

Another shout for the Skoda Octavia VRS, I've had my petrol one for 3 years and it's been faultless. Tows well, returns decent mpg, cavernous boot and plenty of poke.

I'll be getting another when the current one becomes too old.
