Steve I think you were lucky the way you went as I often turn round and come home when the cyclists hold road races and the sheep wander casually onto the road on the fiddle just taunting you :-)

luckily or unluckily i was only coming back accross the cat n fiddle after getting lost near sheffield and luckliy found a sign for buxton  im not a cat n fiddle fan there are far better roads out that way full of pedalists

TBH, this sort of stuff is the reason I never really made an effort to put the Westy back on the road until this year.

I absolutely hate driving these days, it's a mix of idiots who just do 40mph, old people who just do 25, idiots who rage when overtaken, idiots who deliberately obstruct you and on every decent road a bleeding speeding tax camera van.

Seriously I think the best bet for a decent drive is to go blatting at 2am or stick to area's full of schools (thus no speeding tax cameras).

Steve, I recommend you get yourself up to Scotland for a road trip, the only thing to worry about is finding a petrol station  :t-up:

Despite everything that's been said, we all had a great time doing the Yorkshire 8.  Plenty of cyclists but they (surprisingly) seemed to behave themselves even in the Peak District.

Sorry you had such a bad time Steve.

please dont turn this into a cyclist hate campaign or slanging match

Here it comes.

also cyclists should have to do a driving/riding test and have a licence same as the rest of us road users ,and wearing a helmet should be law also they should be alocated points for dangerous rinding and riding without due care and attention or just generally being a muppet on a bike

there is so many these days they are becomng more of a danger than ever and a danger to themselves

And another

or buy a stun gun

Whoops, kind of shot yourself in the foot there, twice  :d Don't worry I'm only having a larf !

yeh i did think that   when i typed it , not really a hate campaigne more summat that should really be done with the licence thing imho ,bit like a cbt for motorcyclists ,if your using the road you should have a licence so you can be held responsible for our actions and receive points and fines , what would of happened yesterday  if the car behind me hit me after i braked to avoid the cyclist or i swerve and hit a car coming the other way ,cyclist carry's on his way and does not stop after causing a accident he cannot be punished because he has no licence or insurance , so simple cyclist take a test ,have insurance and carry a small numberplate on the frame which stays with the owner/rider for life the plate wont be needed for anpr or speed cameras obviously but there for the police and incase of accidents ,simple that way they are held responsible ,the same as other road users , and just ban horses from the road ,job done

can you imagine the job im going to have getting the money out of johny muppet who hit me coming the wrong way over the bridge to pay for my front clam repairs

if he had a licence and insurance and had a number plate it would be easy as i would have his details now and reported the accident and be claiming of his insurance

I do agree with Steve. It really is a change I have seen recently, call it the wiggins effect.

In the 50's when cars were a luxury there were huge cycling groups who went out at weekends. As they became affluent these dropped and only the enthusiasts carried on. Now we see huge groups of mainly men, in lycra who ride with an arrogance in packs emulating the professional cyclists they see, the difference being they are not professional and are riding on open roads.

Last year I was following a pack in North Devon with a huge queue of traffic as they rode two or three abreast, they left no gaps for overtaking and were obnoxious to others less tolerant than me, who expressed their views.

I am all for cycling but it has to be with responsibility, as does driving cars

I agree with Steve to a certain point, and the idiot that ran into him, well no excuses, i doubt he will have insurance, although there are lots - me included that have 3rd party insurance, but if not the only way is the small claims court.

Licensing is a difficult thing; mainly because anybody of any age can have a bike, if you licence a person to ride a bike, who polices it?

The police can't even control all the the unlicensed drivers, cars without MOT, cars without tax, and they are the ones you should really worry about.

As for cyclists on the road, well they have every right to be there, so again i can only advocate tolerance.  Lets face it before cars there were bicycles, before bicycles there were horses, before horses we all walked, so who really has historic rights to all public rights of way?

Pity the weather is so crap as i don't really want to go cycling nor drive the Westy, so looks like i'll go for a walk to the pub  :d

I'm in total agreement, with all you said there.  I don't ride with a club anymore, but when I did (for various clubs around the UK), there was always a "ride leader" and "tail end charlie" it was there responsibility to police when it was appropriate to ride two abreast, single file, and break into groups (not packs) that were far enough apart to allow drivers to leap frog in a safe manner.

Alas, i do have say that i have seen that control not apparent with some club rides, and definately not with "Sportive" rides (cyclist paying to ride a set route) where the "pack" mentality does exist -  I loath them by the way, why should I pay a company to organise a cycle route for me?
