SteveD
near us they have just built a huge cycleway as there are loads that commute on bikes to work along this stretch , I forget the amount but it was hundreds of thousands if not millions by the time they bought the land they spent building it its miles long and about 16ft wide smooth tarmac fenced off and is built in the fields the other side of the hedge from the road so is perfect for cyclists , there have been loads killed on the road over the years so you would think cyclists would be over the moon and use this perfect stretch of tarmac but oh no they still use the road that's all pot holes and grids ,stupid bleedin cyclists deserve to get knocked off imho ,they have no excuses if they do get mowed down when there is a safe cycleway 6ft away , car drivers would give there right arm for the perfect tarmac they have on the cycleway , or is it uncool to use a cycleway what a waste of public money took willem out last night for a drive in the elise and there was a cycle race on ,numbers on there backs etc , they were swerving all over the road avoiding grids n potholes , how can you give them a safe berth when passing if they suddenly swerve halfway across the road infront of you ,a couple of times I was a foot away from the verge on the other side of the road avoiding them ,think I need some james bond spikey spinners that shoot out from my wheels is it legal to race on the public highway ?
Graham0127
Sorry Steve. I wouldn't expect them to ride on the new cycle route. Let's face it.....someone with not enough brain to use a car for work is hardly going to have the sense to use a wonderful, smooth and safe track. Cyclists will often find themselves on their backs...they only have 2 wheels and no engine to help keep them upright. They do have legs to stop the vertical plummet but most are stupid enough to clip them to th pedals. Shall we get onto horses now.....sun's out and guess what .....? Horse sh!? everywhere. Second subject is beginning of my summer rant series !!!! pistonbroke 2
In defence of same. The Rainford By-Pass ( dual Carriageway ) near me is miles long. They have a dedicated cycle path parallel to the rd. When I used to cycle it was littered with crap and broken bottles thrown from passing traffic. It was like a freakin minefield and a puncture was imminent. Perhaps thats a reason why the one near you is devoid of Peddlers.

As a cyclist of 30 years covering on average 12000 miles a year, oh and owner of 3 horses, oh and a Westfield driver I have my own views. Maybe before ranting you should try it out - there's nothing like experience to change your point of view And Yes fully legal to hold a cycle race on open roads
Lawrie
There's just too much traffic for bikes to be safe nowadays, (or to drive a Westfield quickly) and too many cyclists being killed. Their choice.
SteveD
I was a keen biker/pedalist for around 7 years so have experienced cyclesting , there is a perfectly good cycle lane that's pristine so no reason why they cant use it

Lyonspride
Problem with cycle lanes is the local council has them built just to meet targets. The planners don't cycle, the workmen building them don't cycle. What you end up with is something thats unsafe, which you can't use and then you get drivers who don't see the dangers, giving the cyclists a pile if abuse. I do a bit of road cycling every now and then, mostly riding to the nearest forest. The biggest problem I've had is drivers who think I should be passing parked cars well within that oh so lethal door zone. The blame lies with poor road planning, which places drivers and cyclists in a no win situation.
KugaWestie
My pet hate with cyclists is the fact that they are happy to ride through a narrow gap between the kerb and cars when cars are stationary waiting for traffic lights etc, but then don't like it when cars drive by them leaving the same or slightly larger size gap. The difference is control and speed and 2 tonnes of metal. I'd say 80% of drivers can't even park. The idea of one doing 40mph 2 inches from your arm, is very scary indeed. Captain Colonial
I'm all for responsible cyclists and I'm happy to share the road with them. I'm also all for taking irresponsible cyclists, by which I mean those who ride 2-3 or more abreast and in the process block vehicular traffic; those who ride at speed on the pavement and expect you and yours as pedestrians to get out of the way; those who shoot through red lights and at pedestrian crossings, endangering many; those who insist on squeezing down the nearside of your car and either scratching, thumping or kicking your car because they think you should have left them more space; and especially those who refuse to use cycle lanes painted just for them on a roadway; and transporting them all to a local crusher and making them watch as I crush their bicycles. Sorry cyclists, but if you want to be treated as equals on the road, the bare minimum (besides obeying the law and respecting others) should be compulsory number plates so that bad cyclists can be reported in the same way that bad drivers can be reported by good cyclists. Bad cyclists would soon clean up their act if they didn't have the luxury of being twonks and disappearing into the distance without recourse when they pulled a dangerous or thoughtless stunt. The problem is that I see more bad cyclists than good every day.
