  1. Finally whilst I'm typing updates today I collected the chassis back from Powdercoating. I'd not been able to establish the exact colour Johnny Walker used for his cars, other than knowing it was a shade of grey. In the end I settled for RAL7040 which these days is more commonly known as "window grey" but also happens to be the same colour that Cooper, Lotus, Van Diemen and Jedi have used for paint their chassis.

  2. Whilst the chassis has been away at the powder coaters it's given me a chance to get on with a couple of other small jobs. First off I thought I'd better clear the workbench! Two days of tidying later and I could finally see the surface again. Now I could use the bench again I was able to make a start on assembling the engine. The castings were given a good clean up to remove all the oil and grime whilst the covers were cleaned up and polished. To save a few £££ and since I had a bit of free time I thought I'd have a go at trying this for myself. begining with a 400grit paper and working up through to 2000 grit followed by a final polish with the bench grider the results were pretty good but it took ages and a lot of sweat.

  3. I’ve got a well specked 240 bhp westfield that could go round Any track seriously quick ! However as I’m not that good a driver yet I find slower less powered ones hard to keep up with , Its more down to driving ability than power .

  4. Yes we all wonder what impact brexit will have and on the news today they’re saying it could be postponed for another year so we will keep abreast of it and deal with what comes, politicians you’ve got to love them ...... not

  7. Here is mine, BMW 320D GT. Absolutely brilliant car with more legroom than a 7 series, a huge boot and tows well. It's going in two weeks as it is almost 2 years old. 50k trouble free miles. I am gonna miss it but cannot justify the income tax any longer. The replacement is in stock and ready to go, slightly different experience but a £200 a month income tax pay rise It just needs the hardtop fitting and it is good to go

  9. David, Spookily enough I mooted the suggestion of a “joker” round a few years ago in my last stint on the SSOT but the TT system was still new back then so it poo poo’d at the time. Now I’m back on the SSOT again I’ve taken note of your suggestion and will raise it at the next meeting. For what it’s worth I don’t think any bonus events should be nominated by the SSOT as, like Terry suggests it could be unfair to those who can’t go to that event. I do think there is some legs in the idea of a competitor nominating which event(s) they would wish to receive a bonus score at prior say in the week before the event takes place, so in effect you “ play your joker round” . There is an element of chance as you could have a rubbish event or go very well....... just and idea. As Terry said the scoring system is the subject of a lot of discussion on the SSOT and a few different systems were evaluated last year. Each had its good points but also bad ones too so in the end the existing TT system has been kept. The very close margin in points between the top drivers this year shows that the TT system may well just be working....... at last.

  10. I will be there at the July event in 2019. We have it as a regular Formula Festival weekend - run now for 3 years and gets good support. Entries to the weekend were a bit low this year, we have 20 and made up for 20% of the entry. Gurston members and committee decide not to have the Midland Hill Climb Championship in 2018, they always were there on the July weekend so it was quieter than normal this year. Nick will be looking for ways to increase the numbers for that specific weekend, in the absence of the MHCC. It's a great weekend, good camping spot, OK food in the clubhouse, good bar and a couple of really good local pubs. Personally if the offer is for Sat and Sun on the July weekend I would go for that, it's a superb venue for a weekend away - definitely worth travelling to and safer than most hills, great venue to cut your hill climb teeth on - it was my first ever event in 2009.

  11. There’s talk of needing sepperate driving licenses for each country visited, in my naivety I’d assumed, like the old days, you’d just need whatever the modern equivalent of the old international license was.

  12. Yes, it is only 5 minutes drive from Stoneleigh IF you get on the right by pass in the right direction. The A46 is not the A45. @Trevturtle you need to gain major brownie points now before I will do any volunteering for you

  16. Thanks all for the various advice and car offers. I’ve now bought a car which I collect tomorrow. Looking forward to taking it to Knockhill on Saturday. It’s a fairly basic 2001 SEW with 1700 xflow, rebuilt in 2009. It has done 6k miles since. But it is in excellent condition.

  17. There's an aluminium tophat that sits in the hole circled, with an O ring above and below. As you bolt the sump up, it compresses the O rings and forms a seal directly into the base of the oil pump.

  25. For anyone on a tighter budget, I can't recommend one of these enough. Lexus Is200 sportcross. I didn't even know they did an estate version until I found this one. It's not remarkably powerful, but the 2 litre straight six sounds bl**** brilliant and pulls nicely when it's pushed. The car has been brilliantly reliable too (other than when I mess with things I shouldn't mess with). Heated seats, sun roof, great sound system etc. and the practicality of an estate. For about £1k, I don't think you can get much more car than one of these. Also conveniently, if you don't like the stock alloys, rx8 ones happen to be the right stud pattern and offset to slot right on!

  30. well. this is my daily. I think we share engine... to be honest, this is by far the best engine I've ever had. 42mpg on motorway cruises... and 28mpg on town driving. I just love it.

  31. This is my daily And believe it or not, even with a supercharged V8, on a steady run I can easily get above your 30mpg criteria. I love it. It’s a running joke between all my car friends how I change cars so often, but I’ve had this a year and no plans to change it. Can only see me doing so when an SVR comes into budget They sound great, go very well, look nice roof up or down, nice inside, dealer support is good, some good specialists out there to keep costs down.

  34. Polo rad can cope pretty well with a Zetec. Did Le Mans in 40 plus deg one year and the Zetec was spot on Sat in that temp for 2 hrs getting into the car park and temperature was controlled. So, I would question the original being efficient or slightly tired. Is it holding temperature when at speed ? Also on how the fan is on the rad. is it right up to the face ? How good is its operation ? Something like a Spal fan will move more air and control temperature better than a standard one. Just some thoughts.
