First things first - planning and recording

Due current lack of full-time work, I'm making a start on fitting the Koso RX2N Digital Dash that I bought at Stoneleigh in 2012 - so perhaps one of the smallest upgrades that will have taken the longest time to fit...!?

So first things first - some recording of where and what things are today and a high-level plan of where I want to end up. I've mapped out all of the required feeds, power and earth wires from the Koso on a spreadsheet and cross referenced with the std Westfield Zetec loom. I'll also get some file-photos taken of the current dash, wiring and mileage reading and record them on paper. I will also label each wire. My existing dash is a little different to the norm but I don't think it physically makes any difference.

One thing I've noted is that the Koso; whilst predominately a bike unit (they also provide a purpose-made kit for Minis), has a couple of bike specific gauges that I'll not need and transversely, it lacks an oil pressure readout. Not a great problem, just going to have to retain a couple of VDO gauges.

All of my running lights, horn and turn signals are operated from a stalk connected to the steering column which was fitted by a previous owner and the Water Temp, Oil Pressure and Clock sit in a separate mini dash on top of the transmission tunnel under the normal dash.

This gives a fairly sparse dash as you can see:

I've also gone Aeroscreen since this photo so have no use for the Wipers, Wash and Heater switches so I'll just terminate them, label them and tape them up. So far I think the only things I need to retain are:

  • Hazard Warning Lights Switch
  • Fog Light Switch
  • Ignition / Battery Warning Light
  • Handbrake / Brake Fluid Warning Lamp
  • Oil Pressure Gauge
  • Clock

I think I'd like the dash to look something like the below when I'm finished - not sure yet:

So that's my brain dump of the first steps, I've got the spreadsheet and half an idea of where I want things to go, I now need to get out there and start tracing the wires and labeling. I'll also get a bit of cheap hardboard so I can cut a couple of dash blanks to test fit everything...
