First job, give it a wash! Fifteen years of dirt and spiders washed away.

That's better! What a difference already. OK, I know it's just a wash but this boosts the confidence a little and makes the other jobs seem less of a chore.

On to the next part. Here's the engine bay:

Plenty of corrosion. Most of the pipework has had it so that'll need replacing. The aluminium thermostat housing and the water pump both have some very interesting things inside them too.

I think that whatever was in the water has reacted with the aluminium - both items need cleaning out but the metal appears to be intact without any damage other than a little pitting where the hoses attach.

^ That's the thermostat housing. The pile of muck came out of that. The overflow was completely blocked but a quick running through with a twist drill cleaned it out perfectly.

A trip to my local motor factor got me the gaskets and a length of suitable hose to go from the thermostat housing to the top of the radiator. The bottom hose that I presented him for matching triggered a lot of laughter.

Egads - makes me wonder what the rad and the rest of the system will be like!  I see a power flush in your future - good luck! :)
