Hi, Unlike circuit racing, you don’t need a medical or an ARDS course to begin sprinting and hillclimbing. You still have to do things in stages though, and initially apply for a Non-Race National B licence. For £36 this will enable you to enter National B status events, which will include a high proportion of sprints or hillclimbs run by regional clubs. It also means that you won’t be allowed to compete in a racing or sports libre car of more than 2-litres unless the car is road legal. As for the race suit im not sure. This will be my first year sprinting so at 47 im in the same boat, hope this helps

cheers martin

Non Race Nat B is all you'll likely ever need for sprinting (certainly all I've ever had). There's a medical declaration to be made in the application (not onerous); no medical examination necessary.

Much good advice on other requirements can be found at: http://www.wscc.co.uk/download/Beginners-Guide-2011.pdf

You still have time (though not much) to join the Speed Series for this year  --  see the "Store" area (in the menu strip at the top of this page).

HTH, and look forward to seeing you this year.

As an aside you can easily upgrade to a National A Sprint licence by having the clerk of course sign your licence for the required number of events - the fee is slightly higher for a Grade A ........... the upside is if you do get a chance for a shared drive in something a bit special, you can take it :d  :d and it should not have any affect but some circuits and event organisers do take into consideration how many Nat B / A licence holders are attending, especially when an event is over-subscribed (not very often over last couple of years). No medical needed for any Sprint licence when you get to 45 either new applications or renewals

Don't think anyone has answered the O/Ps question about suits; no you can't use a Proban suit, Nomex is required. If you have an old Proban suit nothing to stop you using it for trackdays, I do.

Note you will need race gloves as well. They need the correct FIA label.

I have got race gloves and a proban suit used about 5times I'm only doing this year so may try to borrow a suit I'm only doing a few events

I ended up with a slightly older FIA suit off ebay for £70 in nearly new order. It can't be used for race/rally, but is still fine for sprinting. At that price It's great for my limited sprints and also for track days.

My local motorsport shop has loads for sale as the rally boys are all having to upgrade.

Isn't it just! - Mine's FIA Norme 1986/1986 standard - just phased out in racing but still OK for sprinting.

Just a thought, when I was fitting my 3" harness back in the car over the winter. I noticed a date tag on them.

Does this get checked?  Can't remember

Sorry, Steve, yes it does  --  not always, but mine were checked four or five times last year

Thanks David ;)

NOTE to all new drivers

Check the date on your harness :suspect:

hmmmm- is there a source to check everything - this is a bit of a surprise. None of the beginners guide mention it.

My Willans harness says year of manufacture 1998 - no mention of FIA  - Seems mine are non-FIA , they are the Supersport type:

No expiration date. So I guess, as there is nothing to expire, I'm ok!
