Norman Verona Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 They aren`t really going to save £700 though. Buy a banger and unlikely to have road tax. Insurance as tourists may be expensive. Fuel consumption likely to be higher. Then you`ve got to sell it! Great to read your opinions as usual though Norm I was asked for an opinion so I gave one. If they can't find a car that's already taxed then they can sell the tax on to the next owner.Even if this is another £50 on the price. Insurance shouldn't be that expensive, only need 3rd party. If the worse happens and it's written off then they haven't lost anything as they were prepared to pay the same for a hire car. Even if fuel consumption is worse it won't amount to more than £20 or so. However, it's their choice and I doubt whether they'll listen to us anyway. I guess it's the same argument about renting and buying a house. Quote
Graham0127 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Norman.......you use the word IF a lot..... I was told.....`IF sh!t wasn`t sh!t you could eat it` And..renting or buying a house.....very different. Over to you...... Quote
martyblues Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 enterprise as and when needed I don't run a car for my business any more so if I need a car for a few days I hire one with their full insurance Overhead gone simples Quote
FILFAN Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 if it was me i would hire the car for piece of mind. you could easily buy a banger that needs over 1k spending on it and isnt safe to drive. Quote
exboeingboy Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 With you all the way, Norm! Most reliable vehicle I ever owned cost me £25, ran for two years with no problems and sold for £100. Obviously there are loads of dodgy cars around with serious faults that dishonest people are trying to sell on but there are also plenty of bargains which are totally reliable. I wouldn't want to spend an extra £700 on a holiday.............. I personally would ask at a friendly local garage for a part-ex they need to pass on and wouldn't bother with Auto Trader; you can usually buy any unused tax from them too. Quote
martyblues Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 £700 for 6 weeks (£16.00 / day )car hire sounds cheap to me. I would read the small print very carefully. check excess amounts on damage. A simple knock from a car park door opening could cost you a lot more than you would think. Quote
dombanks Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 i would doubt that you could buy a reliable car and insure it for less than the hire costs. having said that i sold my focus for £700 and there was nothing wrong with it. it had 6 months tax and 12m mot. recent new clutch and brakes/tyres were not that old. the only thing that was broken was the aircon and that was just a regas. so its feasable to buy something decent. just i doubt as cost effective. longer term hire isnt so bad this is for today - beginning of april. granted the chepest is a tiney car but for my money i would getting one of these not potentially ropey old banger http://www.travelsupermarket.com/carhire/carhireresults.aspx?aggregationid=3075800000000673331&c=23&a=-1&l=1389 Quote
pickmaster Andy Lowe Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I've just sold a Saab for £1000 with 99k on the clock on an 02 plate I only bought as a tied me over car and only paid £950 for it :-) Ended up running it for 6 months and only sold as it didn't have the grip to tow a car trailer and westy up our steep slippery exit road It was a great car with all the toys a 9-5 estate Quote
Howden Insurance - Specialist Vehicle Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Afternoon, From an insurers point of view, residency can sometimes cause a problem. An annual policy will probably be pretty costly without any no claims bonus and you would have to take into account any cancellation fees. If the car is already insured then a temporary additional driver should be possible, although some companies will only do it for 28 days at a time. Otherwise my ozzie friend used this when she was over http://www.aplan.co....orary-insurance but it was only for three weeks and quote costly. There are a few other companies that do 'temp cover' and are all of similar prices. Hope that helps Clare Quote
BEN99W Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Well personally I'd buy a car (any excuse for me). If they already own an MX5, then the decision is made. Why limp around in a poverty spec rental for their hols? Get something like this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201302045187283/sort/default/usedcars/model/mx-5/make/mazda/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/page/1/postcode/cm16ed/radius/1501?logcode=p But there's no shortage of choice at this price. alexander72 Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 ive got a saab 9-3 hairdressers car (rag top) yes it's the car of a gayer but they can have that for the summer for a lot less than 700 quid. Apologies to any hairdressers or gay folks..... I just wanted to get it in before SteveD does :-) Quote
SootySport Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 The perfect car for them http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/westfield-kit-car-/121065456505?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item1c30104379#ht_302wt_1129 but lend them your toolbox for the duration. Quote
Yogibear Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 Thanks for all the advice but they have decided to hire a car as they want to drive up to Scotland on there stay and we agreed that it may be a lot of hassle if it goes wrong up there. One bit of good news is that if anyone is going to the Westfield active day on 6th of April we have booked two places so hopefully I will see some of you there Thanks Fraser Quote
