Dave Evans Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 My Westfield came fitted with a 10 inch Mountney steering wheel. This obscures part of both the speedo and rev counter. Is changing this for a larger 12 inch the answer ? or will this give the same problem ? I would like some advice before changing. Both clocks are fitted in the standard Westfield pre - drilled dash. KugaWestie Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Another option is either a quick release or a spacer. Both of these bing the wheel closer to you, which helps with room around the knees if you are tall. It also changes the view on the clocks a bit. Easy to check - take the wheel off and hold it 25 or 50mm closer to you whilst sat in the car and see what you get Quote
Young Pretender Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 You could also look at one of those steering wheels with the top cut off. Not everyone gets on with them though. Quote
Doug Dastardly Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 The 'standard' wheel is a 300mm, or 12in, mountney. This is measured from outside edge to outside edge. When I reduced my wheel I noticed that it obscured a few bits but it's a price worth paying for me. If yours is 280, I would guess it would be pretty quick and easy to find a 300 as so many people change them. Quote
Geoff101 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Swap it for a Momo Team 280. This will mean changing the boss as well but well worth it. The centre is slightly offset giving you an excellent view of the dials through the top. I had an 11" Mountney and had the same problem. Momo: Quote
SootySport Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Mine is a 300 and I can see the clocks ok with standard westfield dash. Quote
User0083 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I have a spare Westfield 300mm mountney. I change boss, mountney m range 300mm and a 25mm thick quick release. See the clocks fine Only 25mm thick Not much left on steering wheel. The wire is my own addition, there is a horn plate, but small contact area held together with springs I thought would wear in time. Quote

I like it. Quote
User0083 Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 It's an iPhone cable... Not normally there, under that is a nice chrome one I got from eBay or Europa spares. There's a matching handbrake surround too, really finishes it off. Youa can just see it in this picture... I would get a better one, but it's cold out there!!! Quote
Norman Verona Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I wouldn't use an open topped wheel with standard steering rack. You need a quick-rack for it. Quote

Is fitting a quick rack an easy, rank amateur job, or one best left to the boffins? Presumably you need to get the wheel geometry setup again afterwards? I've fitted quite a small wheel and think I'm going to struggle to get around the tight bits of some tracks. (I may not, but will find out the weekend after next). Quote
Dave Evans Posted February 12, 2013 Author Posted February 12, 2013 Thanks for your options and advice, will scratch my head a little longer. Will let you know which option I take and how it works out. Cheers. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 If you can wait until early May, you'll be able to see many different examples on Westfields at Stoneleigh at the National Kit Car Show before you decide. Quote
User0083 Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Did it just glue to the carpet? God no! It's a solid chrome ring with 6 holes in it. The handbrake one is a oval with straight sides, again 6 holes in it. I lined mine up, drilled six 3mm holes while it was in place, then got some bathroom mirror mounting shelf tappers with chrome caps and screwed it in. Over the top of the carpet and through the gaiter to hold is in place. Same on handbrake. Took less than 15 mins each. Quote
