CJspeedsport Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 With some track days enforcing a noise limit, is it possible to determine (roughly) how noisey my car will be?! Its a fairly bog standard (factory built) 1.8 zetec with what I assume is a standard exhaust. Is that likely to fail a noise test??? Any help appreciated! Thanks! Chris Quote
Pistol Pete Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Most tracks will let you pop along (when theres a trackday on) and measure you volume. If there are no tracks locally to you then try contacting your lical msa sound man (details in the msa blue book - a copy of which can be found under the speed series area) they are usual very helpful. Good luck and enjoy. Quote
User0083 Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Mine's 1.8 zetec, std exhaust was loud, so went for Ali exhaust, quieter and 93db. Now carbon exhaust and that's loudest of the three. I don't know figures of std or carbon. That's max db reached with iPhone on wall 10ft from car and revved to limiter and let off again, warm engine and stationary. Quote
Pistol Pete Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Noise testing is done 1m at 45' from the exhaust at 2/3 max revs. There should be nothing behind to reflect the noise. Most track days are 105 or 102 which is pretty loud. Quote
Norman Verona Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Don't forget that a lot of noise also comes from the induction. Quote
CJspeedsport Posted February 6, 2013 Author Posted February 6, 2013 An Iphone decibel meter! Thats such a great idea. I will give that a go to get a ball park figure. Thanks for the help all! Quote
Dodgey Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 45 degrees and a metre away - easy way is to tape your phone to a meter long stick. Do it where there are not reflecting walls and set your meter/iPhone to Slow/peak hold and "A" weighting. Castle Combe is 100db and I believe Donnington is lower again, but they seem to be the most stringent. Quote
Young Pretender Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 I was worried about mine when I first took it to a track thinking that it was especially loud. Ended up measuring 98db. Quote
Playo Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 I tried one of them decibel meter apps before it was useless to be honest, but it was a free version so I wasn't holding any hope to start with I know my car is above 100db as it is so I'm getting a chap in cardiff to make me up an exhaust that I can choose the sound level, if yours needs doing perhaps we can try and get a deal for the both off him?? gavinnn Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Donnington is 98db now but it only has a drive by limit so it refers to that. They also move the 2 sound receivers around as well. Quote
CJspeedsport Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 Thanks for the offer Playo, but I can't spend another penny on my car for a while...I got a bit carried away over the Christmas period...roll cage, harness, Tillet seat. Quote
Playo Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Sounds like me! Ha i look forward to seeing your car it sounds very similar to mine Quote
Terzo204 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I have a standard 1.8 Zetec on Jenvy TB's and it has been tested several times in 2012. The result is consistently 97.5-98 DB. BEFORE you book a track-day check - you wont' get a refund if you car fails. Look to see whether it's drive by or static and it's not always 3/4 revs. Some say 4000rpm regardless of max revs. Mike Quote
Dodgey Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 It is very easy to move my red line on my rev counter..... :-) Quote
