Young Pretender
Kills 50% of people infected with the virus.. It cannot currently pass from human to human and research which would involve genetically modifying the virus to do so was shelved a year ago due to fears of creating something uncontrollable. BBC radio 5 this morning did a piece on it (i missed the start) saying that either the debate is open again or research is now going ahead (missed this point and can't find a related article on dotcom).. The benefits of such research are that by creating this scenario in a 'controlled' environment you can monitor the characteristics of the virus as it changes and therefore identify any such mutations if they were to happen in the real world thus identifying a doomsday scenario in advance.. and allowing for preparatory vaccinations (that I don't think exist yet). Worth pointing out that a 'controlled' environment is obviously the most secure laboratory environment possible. Unfortunately track records for virus control in such environments are not great. 50 'accidents' reported annually. The last pandemic experienced in the uk was in 1918 where the virus kill rate (a different virus) was 2%. Did anyone hear this article today then? Are we heading for an 'I am Legend' scenario? ..or am I just filling the pages with regurgitated news articles from boredom

Norman Verona
In 2004 SKB built a huge plant on the outskirts of Brussels using a large grant from the EU to produce a vaccine for Bird Flu. It was agreed that they could use the plant for their other products but as soon as Bird Flu hit Europe they had to produce the vaccine (estimated time 48 hours) and then produce 1 million vaccines per day. Now, weren't they luck.
Welly Jen
What could possibly go wrong? This is why wheelie bins are big enough to put a body in. Bring out your dead! Black bin for land fill in a plague pit. Green bins for chipping and composting. Depends on your local council.
Norman Verona
But you MUST use the correct bin. When we were staying in Stocksbridge for a few months some kids put their pizza boxes in one of our bins. I saw them and thought it was better than throwing them on the ground. However that bin wasn't supposed to have paper in it so the binmen refused to empty it. A long conversation with Sheffield City Council resulted in a chap coming out to empty the bin. Now, I wonder what would have happened if I'd put a body in it.
alexander72
I spend all day in the realm of the bird (the canopy of tree's) and most of it covered in some form of excrement from either pigeon or crow/roosting bird. It gets on my hands, my clothes, my ropes, my kit. I eat my lunch up there (without washing my hands) and have been fit as a fiddle for the past 40 odd years.. Bird flu...... is was it says on the tin... flu of birds.. I'm far more worried about that most virulent and debilitating condition - MAN FLU !!!!
Norman Verona
James, you've built up immunity. I think we're all susceptible to viruses and other complaints because we are too clean, shower every day, eat food within it's so called "sell by date". A bit of dirt and some stale food will do wonders for immunity to disease.

s2rrr
Can you imagine having to run out and lift the body out of the black bin cos it should be in the green bin. What would the council say about that one. Bob
Norman Verona
They'd probably say it should be in the black bin.
