CJspeedsport Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 As my family sleep around me, stuffed full of Christmas goodness, I was thinking about fuel tanks. What's the safest set up for the fuel tank? Can you get a foam filled tank that would slow the release of fuel if the tank took a hit? Merry Christmas all!! Quote
Terryathome Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 If it took a hit and wouldn't release the fuel then how would it release the fuel to get to the engine? Whoops!!! The idea behind foam filling is to stop the fuel sloshing around to quickly when going round a corner therefore stoping the weight of the fuel upsetting the cars weight distrubution. Terry Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 Bag tanks are probably more what you're thinking of. But on a non competition car it might not be a first, but I bet there are very, very, few other Westfield's out there. If you're particularly worried about road debris puncturing a tank, fit a diffuser or make a panel to go under the tank. Quote
Blatman Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 In an accident I think I want my tank to puncture and p*** all the fuel away. That way it's not all in the same place waiting for a big enough spark, or being pumped all over the engine bay by a shorted out fuel pump and a broken inertia switch... Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 The aerorace kits for competition have the fuel tanks installed above the diff much the same as the FW tank rather than behind it so as to reduce the risk of damage to the fuel tank in event of a rear hit. Quote
jonjh1964 Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 How about asking Robertson Fuel Systems? http://www.robbietanks.com/secondary-spill-containment/what-we-do Might cost more than the car though!!!!! Quote
Playo Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Anybody fitted one of these to a narrow/live axle?? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALLOY-FUEL-TANK-SUMPED-KIT-CAR-LOCOST-MK-WESTFIELD-/400314123750?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d3494c5e6 I'm just in the middle of fitting a Plays-Kool full roll cage to my car but have noticed my current tank is too wide to where I need to bolt the rear diagonal bars to the chassis Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I'm not sure if a locost tank will fit but the same company also make a one designed specifically for Narrow bodied westfields http://www.alloyracingfabrications.com/westfield-alloy-narrow-fuel-tank-6-5-gallon.html On new tanks they can also customise them to your needs such as by adding a sump, and I'm sure if width is an issue they could make one a bit narrower than standard. http://www.alloyracingfabrications.com/sump.html Quote
Playo Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 That tank looks very similar to what I already have, maybe I'll measure my one up and ask them to price one up slightly narrower Quote
Norman Verona Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Why not ask if the can shorten it. Quote
