smartphones and driving

Smartphones are clever bits of kit, I am sure most would agree.

Talking to a friend over a beer the other evening, he learnt that in the event of an accident and there being fatalities, the power of the law could not only tell where the phone was, if a call was in progress, but the speed of the vehicles involved in the accident.

A bit big brother, but could be argued either way. Not sure if the data would stand in court

Interesting point I thought, just thought I would see what you all thought…

It would surprise me if all phones are secretly logging GPS location and speeds the whole time. The call in progress bit seems reasonable from call history and provider records

Depends if GPS is switched on and if it's actually accurate enough to survive the maths if margin for error is called in to question.

There's various app's for the iPhone, and I guess others, that record video while you're driving and designed to be used as evidence in the event of an accident.

I have an app that analysis your driving and gives you a summary of your drive. I get 100% on everything most of the time, but sometimes there's heavy breaking and it tells me to anticipate traffic... I'm driving across Birmingham where people walk out in front of moving traffic and moving traffic aims for pedestrians!

Apple track the location of every iphone. It can and has been used in a court of law, certainly in the states.

The GPS on iPhones is not active all the time. If you open an app that requires positioning it takes a good few seconds before it comes alive

If really necessary the mobile phone networks can tell exactly where you are. Trigonometery between the various transmitter cells can pin point your phone to within. 20 feet.

Tends to be very useful in crime

So there's an app to tell me how I am driving! Really!! Interesting !!

Gps has it's place, sometimes worth switching off I guess

I actually wonder how many accidents are caused by smartphones?

A few years ago you used to see a lot of people talking on their phones whilst driving but now I see a lot more typing on their phones at the wheel (I almost said texting, but its more likely updating Facebook or tweeting etc. these days!!) which I think is far more dangerous!

If you have a look at the various websites for traffic flow, then most of their data is captured via mobile phone either from signals or GPS data

Lucky for us this is time consuming and expensive. Plus a breach of human rights.Although it's relatively simple. As people never read contracts and just sign them, I'm expecting soon there may be a bit allowing police use of tracking your phone. Now west mids police wouldn't care and would do nothing with the info. Devon and Dorset police would probably use it as a way of catching speeders. For a while I have been waiting for police to use mobile locations as a way of tracking people on a more regular basis. Pretty much everyone has a phone and now a majority of people have smart phones, of the smart phones most are iPhones.

You can get something called a faraday pouch from eBay. I have one (not to hide from the establishment lol)

Blocks out all signals from the phone. Probably a good idea to use one when blatting if you're open to the suggestion that the police might use your data to prove speeding.

I had to have a faraday pouch in my last career, as working with radio's and sensitive equipment all the time.

Only ever not score 100% due to driver anticipation in Birmingham!
Although conscious of app being used and drive tin top.
One day I'm going to see how low I can go in Westfield! Although worried used as evidence against me. In which case I shall say I was a passenger in a taxi and present 100's if miles of perfect driving recorded!

Oh, lowest chance of RTA... Yeah, right! Why have I had four accidents in 16 months and run over twice? Once on a crossing and once on the pavement??? Oh, yeah... In every incident I was not responsible and only once I was moving in the car! Both times run over I was in the right too. Yesterday, Christmas Day, I was half way across a zebra crossing and greeted but a car screeching to a holt and my wife screaming her head off. The non-British decent driver then attempted to challenge me and say I was in the wrong... Hmm...

Should have dragged him out and givin him some Christmas cheer
