fatbaldbloke Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 There's nothing new..... Over 30 years ago, Moog Controls Inc, was experimenting with a self-balancing motorbike (A Harley AFAIR). It used a flywheel and the point of balance was controlled by a specially adapted "Moog" valve that sensed lean (the mainstream product was aircraft control hydraulics). The problem, as has been mentioned previously, wasn't keeping the bike upright when standing still, it was allowing it to lean when cornering, which I believe was one of the reasons the project was dropped. Meakin Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 If you cnat ride a bike without it falling over, you probably shouldnt be riding a bike? To be honest I don't know a single biker who hasn't fallen off at some stage, and we've all dropped a bike at some stage. Usually followed by a lot of swearing. Nice idea but as has been mentioned its got to lean into the corners and there was no high speed video shown so no idea of stability. The main problem I see is the price it should be half the price of a car imho as its going to be a commuter thing. Saying that I can see there being a market for this kind of vehicle esp. as the plastic pig is hard to get. ie bikers looking for winter transport. Quote
dombanks Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 That's pretty impressive and tbh if it was safe (as in rides properly) its the kind of thing I would consider. Not for 20k tho. I have a 5 mile trip to work the car is barely warm. 1bus an hour comes down the street even though I live in the centre of a city now. I can walk 15 mins to a better route but then that goes nowhere near my work. The rider falling thing: my friend fell of his on a corner 20 m from his house, says he just spazed the clutch and next thing he was on the floor. I don't think this is aimed at bikers fir me its great. I dont want the hassle and cost and cost of learning to ride, neither do i want to look like a power ranger or wear all the other clobber or dick about on a bus, the last time i used one it took 40 mins to do a journey that in a car takes 10. This would be great. I didn't watch the whole vid tho so maybe they did say it was aimed at bikers but I recon more like people like me. This is just different thinking (maybe a bit old style) in a way that makes sence. The guy is right tho we all pretty much sit on our own in a car. So why not make them single seater. Rock on with this **** i seem to be turning into a farmers marker going, Croatian olive oil using guardian reading middle class person as I get older so why not go electric too (I'll keep the z4 and westy for the weekends) Quote
