Type 9 Five Speed Box Swop

Recommended Posts

After a struggle i got the pinto block and 4 speed box out of my narrow today ready to replace with a type 9 five speed box. All looked OK at forst but then i noticed that the gearbox mounting saddle piece needs to be a three inches further back/ Looks like i can drill two new holes in the chassis croos plate. Has anybody else had this problem please and how did you overcome it? Many thanks

When changing boxes the 4 speed and 5 speed are different and you will need to drill new holes for central box support

If existing plate is long enough thats fine otherwise you may need to fabricate a new plate and bolt or weld it in place

Have you checked if your prop shaft is right length

I presume speedo is ok

I've just received a new mounting plate from Westfield which I dont think I want. I just needed the saddle which I should be able to bolt direct to the existing plate I think. The plate I have is tophat cross-section, slightly tapered and has three holes each side. Does this sound like what you are looking for? It looks as if it mounts on the threaded lugs which are welded into some of the Westfield chassis. I'll know for certain that I don't need it in the next week or so.

If you think what I have may be what you need, let me know, and pm me an email address, and I'll send you a photo of what I've got.

Was a while back, but when converting from 4 to 5 speed I do recall having to relocate the lower mounting (welded on a new plate), changed the gearstick remote from the old-style mounted on the chassis type to the mounted on the box type, different length prop, slight changes in the positions of oil filler access hole in the tunnel and speedo cable outlet. Think that was it.....

A '91 vintage wide by the way.

My old 1992 Pinto engined car had a 4-speed Gearbox to which I converted to 5-speed. From memory, I believe the 4-speed Gearbox was an ‘E’ type (not the car!) and apart from fabricating the plates for the rear mounting, everything was the same.

By this, I mean the First motion shaft fitted the Clutch, the Gearlever was in the correct position and the Prop shaft was the perfect length. I was not bothered about the Speedometer as I had and electronic one.

Here is hoping you have the same luck as I did.

Hi I changed my 4 speed to a type 9 last winter, the mount required moving back I think approx 120mm I just cut off with a thin slitting disc on a grinder then rewelded in position.

The propshaft required cutting down and the output shaft end was a different size so I brought a old capri prop and got the end machined offf and welded onto my cut down prop.

Mark.

Type E to 5 speed is a doddle, just had to move the mount back and fit a longer speedo cable when I did mine. The gearlever is bolt on not screw in. Prop, clutch etc are all the same.

The type 3 box which is the more common 4 speed box is not as easy unfortunately.

I can't recall which version of 4 speed box ours had, but I do know for sure it needed a new prop when I put the type 9 in. Lots of variation in bits so YMMV.

Burton's do guides to the various types of four and five speed Ford gearboxes with pictures. This should help you identify which one you have. Apparently a type E can use the same propshaft when swapped for a type 9. Others may need the prop shaft altering.

the 1300 / 1600 box with cast in b/h from escorts are shorter,

type E (rs2000 cortina 2.0 etc) has removable b/h and prop is same with type 9.

hope that helps.

Type E then, as I used the same bellhousing on the type 9. Still needed a different prop though. The spline was OK, but the length was wrong for whatever reason. Still have the old prop in the garage....must try and sell it one day.....
