XTR2Turbo Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 I wonder how the teams know that they are getting down to one litre? Is it calculated based on what they add and consume or is there a very accurate sender in the tank? Quote
Scottish Bloke Posted November 3, 2012 Author Posted November 3, 2012 With the amount of running and data available to F1 teams this shouldn't happen. It's just a sign of how desperate RB were to get anything better to move them as far as possible up the grid knowing they were not going to be as quick as McLaren. The daft thing is if the car had made it back to the pit area it may not have had to give a sample, stopping on track made it a little obvious. Quote

Is it calculated based on what they add and consume or is there a very accurate sender in the tank? i think the fuel pressure in the engine dropped. You saw it pulling a "false neutral" before he pulled over and it was the engine mechanics who told him to stop - obviously they had seen the fuel pressure drop significantly and the engine had reacted to it in some way. This really could open up the championship again - this may hand it to Alonso, or even Hamilton has an outside chance now. Quote

Extremely unlikely for a number of reasons. Both championships are RBR's to lose. The last thing they want is to be penalised, they don't have to win and certainly don't need to beat McLaren. There is no sense in taking the risk. They are also representatives of Red Bull's drinks business. Being found to be anything less than respectful to the rules and reasonably honourable doesn't best support drinks sales. For sure, they push the boundaries of the rules because you have to in order to compete, but they don't set out to break any consciously and have always adhered to any findings of the stewards or FIA technical management. Much more likely that a technical malady has led to the engine consuming excessive fuel or possibly leaking somewhere. Quote

Dommo Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 Should make for a better race anyway, and keep the championship alive for longer. Maybe they should randomly send leaders to the back of the grid! Quote
pistonbroke Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 I was looking forward to a showdown between hammy and vettel , wont happen now . Quote
GreigM Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 Much more likely that a technical malady has led to the engine consuming excessive fuel or possibly leaking somewhere. Horner just confirmed pretty much as I had said - low pressure detected in the engine due to lack of fuel, the renault guys spotted it in the engine telemetry and made the call to stop the engine. His words were "the margin was a bit too tight" on the amount they had put in the car. You might be right that it was over-consuming but he all but admitted it was under-filled (you know horner, always a politicians answer, never a straight one!) Quote
SteveD Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 vettel what the devil was he doing ,then screaming like a kid about ricardo Quote
