Tonneau Cover For Narrow Body With High Back Seats Help, Please

Hello Everybody,

I've been thinking of something to help me enjoy driving again and this seemed like a great way to do it.

Just taken the plunge and bought an 88 SE from up Norf in Lancashire! In live just at the bottom of the M40 in Denham and now got to go and bring it back. (Hope it doesn't rain!)

I've loads of questions and thoughts of upgrades etc, but my primary concern is keeping it dry if I get caught at work when it rains?

It looks to me to be sporting an RAC roll bar, hopefully someone can let me know if this is actually the actual one. ???

the car has the full screen with it though currently I want to try running it with the Aero Screen, therefore I figured that the best option is to get a Tonneau cover for it.

My issue is I can't find one which fits over the high back seats.

I've looked around the web and at various sites but cannot find one to fit.

Should I call Softbits and see about a custom made one, or am I just looking in the wrong place?

All assistance much appreciated and hope to meet allot of you soon.

Cheers

I had a tonneau that wouldn't fit over the high back seats so I contacted a local upholsterer and he took out the old (smaller) seat pockets and stitched in some bigger ones. I took the car to him so he could measure up. However, I already had the tonneau so just needed to get it modified.

Oh - welcome and I hope you enjoy the car.

saw that on the internet. Very good value car that. looks like a pre lit body.

Why dont you trailer it if you're not keen on driving it.

Getting a tonneau cover cover and altering isn't something I had thought about but certainly something to consider.

I'm kind of excited about getting hold of the car and just driving it for longer than the test drive.

Feel a little bit like a kid a Christmas and its not that far away after all. I just can remember the days of being socked through on a bike and am hoping for a dry drive home. I've got the weekend to get it back so hopefully ill pick the best day and have some fun.

I also thinking of staying off of the motorways as again it will be a little more enjoyable by I'm wondering if that is pure madness

Thanks for the advice

Hi Gordo,

If you just want to keep the cockpit dry while the car is sat in the car park at work, then there are simple cockpit covers. Someone advertises one in Westfield World for £54.95. It folds up in to a little bag when not in use. It is claimed to work with both aeroscreens and windscreens and hooks over the mirrors if the car has an aeroscreen. Contact details in the ad are 07976 226566, 01283 701827, kitkat@gotadsl.co.uk.

I ended up making a new tonneau cover for my car when the old one gave up the ghost. Not too hard, but my car has low back seats that didn't need pockets over them. There are plenty of car trimmers who may be able to help. Also people who make boat covers may also be able to do something for you.

Welcome to the club. Have fun on your first drive. Go easy, especially if the roads are damp and take your time. Personally I'd do a first long trip off motorways. You have no idea just how big lorries are till you pass one in a Westfield! These cars are very different to drive and take a while to get used to. Lots of fun though. I'd also advise wearing a helmet if it is aeroscreened, but that is a whole controversial area.

Hi Jenny

Thanks very much for your advice. The cover idea may well be the way to go. I'll look into it.

The advice about the first long drive sound very sensible too. Looks like I've got a short off motorway drive to plan.

Popping round a friends to liberate an unused helmet too.

Thanks

Hi Gordo,

Some good advice on a long car pick up drive here. Covers it all really. Check the car, take it easy, plenty of breaks, assume no other drivers have seen you, warm clothes, waterproofs.

Have fun,

Welcome along Gordo, you've just bought into the best fun possible on 4 wheels for the money IMO!

Looks like Sunday will be your day then?

Jen's link provides some excellent advice - my first drive when I picked mine up was 250miles in April - hail, sun, rain - absolutely loved it. Layers is what you need & don't forget the gloves

Glad to see you're getting a helmet.... I've fitted an aeroscreen and motorway speeds without a helmet make you realise how exposed you are!!

I'm actually envious of that journey, you'll love it

Enjoy :)

softbits or similar company can make one that goes over the seats and velcros onto the top of the dash and fits around the roll over bar etc
