GreigM Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 St Petersburg - without a doubt the most beautiful and fascinating city I've been to Quote
peterg Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Athens is mostly nice and plenty to see if you like history and architecture, there are a few areas full of immigrants from North Africa which you'd be best avoiding after dark but it is worth a visit - if you're lucky you might get an earthquake tremor while you're there - we were having a drink by the hotel rooftop swimming pool at 11pm when we saw the surface of the water start rippling luckily it only lasted about 10 seconds and didn't happen again. I once went to Stockholm, there and back in a day (for a 2 hour business meeting... don't ask) but what I saw very briefly was lovely and everyone I know who has been says it is really beautiful. Like you I've been to Prague and Budapest and both are lovely in slightly different ways. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 If you're going for 3-4 days, then agreed, St Petersburg, no brainer. Been to 12 of those cities, been drunk in five of them. Quote
Terry Everall Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 As well as St Petersburg I enjoyed a Robbie Williams concert in Berlin! A great city Quote
Stuart Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Been to 17 and been drunk in most if not all of them. Berlin, Copenhagen or Stockholm all worth a visit Quote
GALLY Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 I had a great time in Budapest, Bratislava & Prague. All lovely places, travelled up the Danube to Vienna too. I much prefer the Eastern European destinations. Ive not priced anything up yet but I love a bargain, I dont wish to revisit anywhere if you know what I mean, life is too short and too many places to see. I have to say though im concidering Zagreb, Moscow & St Petersburg Quote
davidgh Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Assuming you've been to London, if you like bigger cities, then it's got to be Berlin or St. Pete. Of the smaller cities you haven't visited, Stockholm or Lisbon are delightful (but the latter is warmer and cheaper!!). Quote
V8grunt Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Skegness is nice! Well it was 50 years ago! Quote
acafrao Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 City of Funchal, capital of Madeira Island. If any of the wscc'ers do indeed come here and want any kind of info or any help please let me know..if you bring your westfield by plane we will go for a driver around the island mountains! You will most definitely enjoy it.. This is if by then i have sorted the emissions problems that have been haunting me in the last few months! Quote
kevip6 Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 I have to say though im concidering Zagreb, Moscow & St Petersburg Zagreb was just ok for me, much prefered Berlin and Prague. I love Bratislava for a beer weekend away with the mates but not sure I'd go for a family trip as you have better cities on your list for that! I've been to a lot of those on the list and you can't go much wrong with any of them but I've never been to St Petersburg or Moscow and they're definitely on my short list for next year!! Quote
kevip6 Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Oh and I wasn't so keen on Warsaw either, Krakow is a much better choice for a polish jaunt IMO but I know that's not on your list Quote
Wile E. Coyote Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 1 - Athens, Greece - Terra Vibe 2 - Bucharest, Romania - National Stadium 3 - Istanbul, Turkey - Kucukciftlik Park 4 - Zagreb, Croatia - Hippodrome 5 - Munich, Germany - Olympic Stadium 6 - Stuttgart, Germany - Mercedes-Benz Arena 7 - Frankfurt, Germany - Commerzban Arena 8 - Berne, Switzerland - Stade de Suisse 9 - Copenhagen, Denmark - Parken 10 - Stockholm, Sweden - Borlange Peace & Love Festival 11 Dusseldorf, Germany - Esprit Arena 12 - Bilbao, Spain - BBK Festival Just taking the ones you've not been to: 1 - only been for a day or two but could see it being a good long weekend if the Greeks aren't revolting. Obviously good if you like classical architecture, recall getting around being a bl**dy nightmare. 2 - Been elsewhere in Romania and absolutely love the place. Lovely people and cheap food/drink too. Might still be a bit of a culture shock though - donkey carts and folk washing clothes in the river in the town I was in around 2000. 3 - Great place (and would probably be my choice), certainly won't get bored in 3-4 nights. Great food, good beer, fortune telling rabbits, and a few scam artists. 4 - Not sure you'd fill a long weekend. The old part of the town is nice, "New Zagreb" is Soviet poured concrete. Had one of the best meals ever in the old town (although did get a little fleeced on it). 5 - Been a few times. Haxnbauer and Hofbrauhaus? Both excellent. 4 nights might be pushing it a bit unless you want to go a bit further afield. 6 + 7 - Only been on business, but never saw anything that made me think a longer trip might be in order. Could well be wrong though! 8 - Switzerland is lovely. Been years since I've been to Berne. Take the car, enjoy the roads? 9 - Copenhagen is pleasant enough, but quite pricey and I could see it being challenging to fill 4 night trip. 10 - Anywhere in Sweden seems to have a pleasant vibe. Tends to be quite pricey though... 11 - see 6/7 12 - Well, there's the Guggenheim... So, my list would be: 1st Istanbul 2nd Bucharest 3rd Stockholm or Berne But I'd probably be tempted to also consider somewhere a little more obscure... Quote

Yeah, shame that's not on the list, brilliant place, especially on New Years Eve, beautiful mountain roads for fun. Hope you get it sorted soon! Quote
