Dodgey Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Any recommendations? I tried one at castle Combe that slipped inside my exhaust pipe but the external part - the actual silencer - touched the rear wheel arch. I could get one of those and then either get a bend put in it or fab a bent pipe "adapter" I guess..... Or I suppose I could chop the main pipe shorter and have the can mounted further forward but then I would have the brackets in the wrong place .... Currently producing 101.5db static with the can replaced for the test. Quote
GreigM Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 I assume you're trying to get down to 98db? Why not get a big fat silencer fitted? By the time you pay for a Db Killer I'd assume you're some way there to paying for it. Paul Gooderham was the bloke's name who was custom making them for westies... Quote
Dodgey Posted October 22, 2012 Author Posted October 22, 2012 Hmm never thought of that. My current one is rather small. I was trying to achieve 100db last time, at castle Combe. But the quieter the better. Perhaps I could have one made up and just fit it for track days... Quote
Burlers Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 My Wunoff silencer is excellent, 97dB at 4.5k on a VX C20XE with a standard westfield front manifold, but you're looking at a lot more wedge than a DB killer sort of money! Induction raw is another thing of course! Quote
Burlers Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Doh! Cheers Terry... That's my eardrums that are raw Quote
Dodgey Posted October 24, 2012 Author Posted October 24, 2012 :-) I'll get a quote from Paul Gooderham 1st as his prices seem reasonable and see what size he recommends for my car. If it's mahoosive I might make sure I can interchange them for road and track. A £180 can is not to far off a £60 muffler - and I don't lose loads of BHP. Quote
SootySport Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Why not upgrade your exhaust to a new silencer, plenty available and PlaysKool doing an offer at the mo. and most seem to come in around 90db. 98db. I couldn't be bothered with swapping boxes around just for a trackday. Quote
Dodgey Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 It's only 2 bolts. I'll look at playskool - thanks (what's the offer? and the db you talk about - is that general experience on here?) Quote
woodman Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 Dodgey you appear to have the Std Raw silencer I found it to be too loud Like others have said , buy or make a bigger one 6" or 7" and longer than the Raw one as well. You can probably get 25"-30" long This will help Quote
SootySport Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 The offer is here http://forum.wscc.co.uk/forum/index.php?/topic/97391-playskool-exhaust-discount/ Mr Dodgey ends 31/10/12 get in quick. Most of the new type larger exhausts are quieter and repackable. Quote
Dodgey Posted October 28, 2012 Author Posted October 28, 2012 Thanks all - now I have a dilemma and I need your help! :-) (existing can is 600mm of which only 460 is actually baffled - the rest is conical ends. The can is 115-120mm wide (around 4 and 1/2 inches). I tested at 102.5db at Castle Combe, then down to 101.5db after repacking with new stuff. Option one: Buy a playskool SS exhaust with a reducer (http://www.plays-kool.co.uk/acatalog/Exhausts.html). Should fit and I'll just have to get a local garage to weld on a bracket at the exhaust end. Cost with discount: £255 Pros: Stainless Steel, £255. If it's not quiet enough I can sell it and clamp my existing can back on for now. (maybe I'll have to cut my existing pipe to accommodate the adapter anyhow?) Cons: No idea what noise reduction to expect. Might not be enough? Option two: Paul Gooderham (http://www.paulgooderham.co.uk/exhaust-cans) has said if I trace an outline of my car, downpipe, and can on paper, he will make a custom can that is longer and fatter (he said the length is the most important bit - fnar fnar!) and made so that I cut some length of my pipe that comes out of my 4 into 1 - so the can mounts nearer the front and hence it's longer. ( you will see from the photo below, my 4-1 comes out at a funny angle). Pros: Will almost certainly be quiet enough, he knows his **** - nice chap to talk to. Cons - Not stainless steel (is it alloy?), £300 - which I think is a good price for a custom can, but it's still £45 more. Irreversible alteration to my pipe needed so I can't go back. Currently I'm leaning towards to Playskool can but I could do with any pointers..... Quote
