markcoopers Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 I've got one of those fisher price ones, you can drop it and it still works. Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted October 10, 2012 Author Posted October 10, 2012 blimey thanks for all the offers of help and the advice - think I need to go try a few out even had offers of loan of cameras from club members - Quote
CrashBangWallop Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 One minute exposure. The first thing I did when I got my camera. http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/ Another long exposure bit of fun. http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/ Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 You need to be careful comparing lense zoom lengths. It was easy when we were talking 35mm film but digital cameras now have different size sensors (e.g. Nikon FX, DX, V) etc and the same lense would give a different size image on each. With FX the format matches the old 35mm film, with the other two a shorter lense will give a proportionately larger image. If we are talking 35mm lense sizes as a reference then I would say you need 300 - 400mm for motorsport. If one of the medium formats then probably 200 - 300mm. More confused now ;-) Quote
Norman Verona Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I have a 170-500 mm Sigma lens for my Cannon 300D. I reckon it's about 300 mm maximum in 35 mm format terms. I take the view that professional lenses are not needed when the largest picture you take will be printed A4 size. If you're going to print larger than this then you may need an expensive lens. Same, to some extent goes for cameras. Quote
peterg Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Doesn't quite work like that Norman... The 1.6x field of view crop factor of the 300D means that the outer 40% (approx) of a standard EF lens is not used what this means is that at the short 170mm focal length what you will see is the "35mm film camera" equivalent of 272mm and zoomed out to the full 500mm you will get what a film camera would see at 800mm! Norman Verona Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Ah, is that right. Well blow me down with a feather. I had (have) a 300 mm lens for my Cannon EOS film camera and the non-digital lens seems to go further. Lost interest in photography these days. Just set to auto and point and click. Best camera I had was a Pentax. I think it's in one of the gites on the book case. Quote
AidanPlace Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Clegster, Few of my pics here. I prefer canon and use a 7D which is fast (8fps)with good autofocus, but would be all of your budget. http://www.flickr.com/photos/66576178@N03/sets/ My twopeneth would be get the best glass you can afford. Zoom length depends on where you will be shooting and how far away you are. Most of my stuff is local circuit/road racing/rally where you can get pretty close and a 70-200 is plenty for me although I do carry a 1.4 extender. a good 70-200 might break your budget however (although I might be able to help you out if you go canon fit :-).) If you are at the larger British circuits 70-200 probably wont be enough without accreditation getting you the other side of the barriers. I started with a 70-300 kit lens which was great for reach but slow and at the long end and would only give me F5.6 at 300mm, which meant that on dark days the iso had to be raised very high to get the shutter speed needed. Also a lens with a fast autofocus will give you the ability to stop the action otherwise panning shots will be all you'll end up with in focus. Ahh decisions decisions Aidan I have a nice Sigma 70-200 F2.8 sat in my garage i've been meaning to get rid of :-) Quote
bhouse Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I have a nice Sigma 70-200 F2.8 sat in my garage i've been meaning to get rid of :-) Hmm. I'm looking out for a Canon fit 2.8 70-200 at the moment. What is the selling price please? PM if you'd prefer... Brian Quote
FILFAN Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Hmm. I'm looking out for a Canon fit 2.8 70-200 at the moment. What is the selling price please? PM if you'd prefer... Brian Yeah I also wanted that lens when I went to get my Nikon 70x300. But £1000 with the stabilisation was just too much for me really Quote
Bob Green Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Hmm. I'm looking out for a Canon fit 2.8 70-200 at the moment. Brian Check this company out. I believe they have been mentioned elsewhere in this thread. Quote
Davep1 Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 For a 70 - 200 on a bit less budget than the f2.8, this f4.0 is on the Canon refurb site... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-EF-70-mm-200-mm-F-4-0-Lens-Refurbished-1-Year-Warranty-/280993366028?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item416c82800c Quote
Bob Green Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Good price but does not have Image Stabilizer which under certain circumstances can be extremely useful. It is worth keeping an eye out for 70-200 f4 with IS. Quote
peterg Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 It is worth keeping an eye out for 70-200 f4 with IS. I managed to get my little used Canon 70-200 F4 IS with a genuine Canon tripod mount for £600 earlier this year Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted October 12, 2012 Author Posted October 12, 2012 doing what I always do when getting too much information - nothing keeping my eye on eBay at moment as I think in my own mind I have narrowed it down a little - I will probably nip out to Jessops and have a look to see what package deals they have plus have a good chat to them - Nikon D90 or a Cannon 600 or 650D Lens is the difficult decision really isn't it - I think I am probably want to go for a mutli use lens so thinking something like an 18-200mm with anti vibration built in As it is a multi use camera do you guys think I am on the right wavelength?
