jonjh1964 Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I sorted out the insurance for my new build a few weeks ago to cover the pre-MoT and IVA and they require an immobiliser fitting. I'm going to wait until after the IVA to fit one to avoid the official installation certificate requirement - any thoughts on the most suitable immobiliser for a WF? Quote
Andy Banks Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Don't you need the installation cert for insurance purposes...? Quote
Rhett Turner - Black Country AO Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I've fitted a Falcon Predator MK2 Transponder Immobiliser, wasn't too much to buy and straightforward to fit and use. I have not gone into detail on my blog but if you want more info drop me a line. Quote
nearly done Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 You will need a electronic immobiliser fitting for the IVA (or a mechanical one). No certificate is required for the inspection. Cheers, Sean. Quote
Doug Dastardly Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 While you might well want an immobiliser, it wouldn't nessasarily be a requirement for insurance. I didn't need one and although I'm sure you'd get a discount for having one, westy insurance is pretty cheap already so a percentage discount might take a while for you to get your money back. Quote
BobMet Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I've fitted a Predator Falcon EVO3 immobiliser/alarm, with microwave intrusion sensor. All in all it works quite well. The main issues are: a) the buttons on the fob are to easy to press by accident, setting the alarm when you don't want to b) the battery connections in the fob seem a bit weak - not sure how long they will last c) the electronics unit is far from waterproof so bear that in mind when locating it. Having said that I've not had any problems after 3500 miles, including some horrendous rainfall. I guess, once its installed, tested and working reliably one can seal it up by squeezing silicone rubber into all the holes and gaps. Its a fair price (£116 in July 2011), has reasonable instructions and is fairly straightforward to fit. The email support from falcon-secutiy.com was excellent when I had a question about installing the microwave sensor. Quote
chappers Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 I'd just go for a transponder immobiliser so it all works in the background. Got mine from abacus car alarms, though they don't make the one I fitted to my old car. Didn't make any difference to my insurance whether I fitted it or an installer fitted it to get the Thatcham approval so I did it myself. Quote
blue ass fly Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Theres a westfield one on ebay at a tenner with two transponders Same as the one on my factory built one Item no 130776890504 Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 as far as security is concerned removable steering wheel and the steering put on full lock is enough to deter most casual car theif not relevant to IVA though If I was that bothered I would rather spend my money on a tracking type device rather than an immobiliser just my opinion :-) Quote
