Could any of you learned gentlemen out there steer me towards the part number if there is one for the oil thermostat as fitted into the sandwich plate on an XE engine, the twist being, I want one which is set at a lower temperature than the standard one, part No 90322486 which is set at 107-120'c. I want to extend my cooling capability and yes I know I don't need an oil cooler but I am experimenting. I have dropped my engine temperature using an 82'c stat and it runs nicely between up to 92'c no problems but I haven't as yet given it as good a thrashing a it deserves for a sustained period. I believe if I can get a stat set at say 90-100 it will help with my overall cooling should it be needed. My theory being that if the export model water stat is set 10 degrees lower maybe the oil stat is similar and rather than cutting a slot in the seat of the stat to allow flow constantly the proper way is to get a lower stat. My current oil temperature does not yet go much over 80'c which tells me something but for any extra cooling I would need to get the oil up to the 107'c and the corresponding rise in water temperature may mean I have to slow down as my cylinder head may be at risk. I know I can get a bigger better aluminium rad at £250 ish and a rebuild of my nose cone area but bear with me, their may be a quick fix (not thats its broken yet) as the water stat cost £7 or so and that sorted my fan staying on too long. Any help would be appreciated, another issue is that you can't test if its working as unless you boil up some oil, water is too cold, boiling at 100'c to get it to work. Gadget man suggested trying a Mocal stat and that is an option but you never know there just may be the correct part already lurking out there, who knows.

The temperature a stat is set to, will have no effect on cooling , just the temperature the engine will try and run at . If the stat is 90, 80 or 100 the engine will over heat if the radiator area is insufficient - if the heat output of the engine exceeds that removed by the rad the temp will increase until the water boils - wot ever the stat is set to.

. I suspect the oil stat is set at that temperature to allow moisture in the oil to be evaporated off and not keep the oil too cool, so not sure a lower temp stat is available ??? My XE oil temp reaches around 90c on a track day .

Thanks for the response. Maybe so but with the stat set at 107'c it will never open up, some may say thats a good thing. I want the comfort of the additional volume of oil to be working for me not just carrying around a cooler full of cold oil as the valve isn't opening. I certainly don't want it to go to the 120'c fully open mark. My mates does open up and has done for ages I suspect my new stat is sealing whereas his is passing. I bought it as I couldn't get the old one to open then realised water doesn't boil at 107'c so gave up. Also as the engine temperature or heat output will rise on a track day as you say, probably to give an oil temperature of 90'c+ it won't be boiling off any water anyway unless you include the higher temperatures at the top of the engine. In reality I want a slightly lower set stat to know that its working when needed and not when not if you see what I mean. 107'c to me seems a bit too high when you consider that the oil temp and water temps seem to rise fairly steadily together. I don't want to damage my head but will see how it goes when I do eventually get on the track. I know on the motorway it does rise fairly quickly but haven't given it enough of a high speed run to check it out maybe thats something I need to do the first good weekend I can, maybe this weekend if the weathers ok. It may be as you suggest that my golf\polo rad may be too small but with some help from the oil cooler and heater can pump out enough heat to keep the engine safe. As I said still experimenting.

Cheers

The motorway bit may mean you need some ducting to the radiator -I suffer to an extent with this and its on my winter list, possibly made worse by your higher output XE?? ( I've 165bhp) ( bigger water rad needed ??)

I''ve googled for other stats and not found anything, but *thought* I saw the standard oil stat was 95C (maybe wrong here)????

Could you just remove the oil stat and use a blanking plate over the cooler itself to keep up temperatures for normal use ( or an after market plate with no stat) and just remove it on track days ? nice hot hot will remove any condensate from the oil even if its not above 100C,

I see the Demon tweeks adapter is set for 80C - if you can't get a suitable stat maybe you could use this and remove the standard stat, might well be worth ringing SBD or similar first to see what is available to fit the standard housing ( I'm, not to familar with this and mines in the bin!)
