Steve, why shovel it out the way when it'll be back there in the morning?

We have the corner lot, if I don't we end up with snow drifts, the last one was over four feet high, no fun digging thru that lot.

Morning Marty, morning all from a clear and sunny France.

It looks very much like the head gasket. If someone can confirm the oil gallery is there, I can't remember, it's been at least 15 years since I had a xflow head off.

However, they're very easy to get the head off and change the gasket. Can easily be done in an afternoon with all the right tools and parts to hand.

If all your going to do is change the head gasket then:

Remove the manifold from the head

Leave the carbs on, just disconnect the throttle cable and fuel pipe.

Remove the top hose from the thermo housing (having drained the water.

Remove the rocker posts. "shake" the pushrods loose to

remove the head bolts

Lift the head.

Clean both surfaces thoroughly using fine emery cloth

Use a steel rule straight edge and feeler gauge to check the head or block aren't warped.

Ensure the head gasket is aligned.

Refit the head and then refit the rocker shaft and pushrods.

Refit the manifold using new gaskets.

Refit top hose and throttle cable.

Refill the coolant (that you saved)

Change the oil and filter.

You will need.

1 head gasket

manifold gaskets

oil

filter

rocker cover gasket (only if existing is broken, they're normally stuck to the rocker cover)

The 7 workshop used to have copper exhaust manifold gaskets but I'm not sure if they still have them. The head gasket can be obtained from Burtons.

Hope that helps and sorry if I'm teaching granny.

The sun's burning my eyeballs.  The sky is blue.  There's no wind.  It's a good West Wales day.  Shame I can't manage a blat since I have to stay in to receive a delivery.  Perhaps later :)  :)

MB - I'm so tempted but it's delivery for SWMBO and I would pay for that for a long, long time
