At The End Of My Westy Tether

Conehead

Recommended Posts

i had a bottom end rattle from a xflow that turned out to be manifold vibrating where it touched a chassis tube..

slight engine mount mod and rattle was gone.

recheck tubes for any fouling when engine flexes itself.

good luck.

I remember I had a similar rattle a couple of months ago and it turn out to be a venturi in the delortos. b*****k will have to check that tomorrow evening!

The main problem I see with DIY xflow is availability of parts. Most xflow parts in my experience are either ebay "specials" or mega expensive new from specialists. You really have to have all the tools and experience to make a amateur build successful. I know that the builder of my second engine took the parts to a machine shop to ensure all were correct. I only wish that the garage had taken such care.. Thats why I've decided to go down zetec route. I only do the ancillaries though, as I have neither the expertise or tools for an engine rebuild. Even though more expensive than a simple xflow replacement the more availability of parts and newness make it easier for the amateur builder to source suitable parts and put together. I'm sure the same can be said for the internals.

One thing I remember about this forum though is that when my first engine went bang. I decided to give it to a garage to fit/sort out rather than doing myself. That was my mistake as I wanted the car back in a hurry (it was my only car and I was in a hire car at the time). Someone on this forum (I think it was Scott but may be wrong). suggested actually buying a run about and fitting it myself. I wish I had taken that advice as I would have been better off and probably with a car on the road now.

The point is conehead, there is a lot of very wise people on this forum with lots of experience willing to offer good advice (for free). They do it without malice or intending to be patronising or critical. I understand you are p****d off but I would serious take on board what people are saying. Just my 2p worth and no offence meant.

Hey folks, I thought about this in the lorry today - poor old conehead has a westy he detests owing to one thing or another.....Could we, as WSCC brethren, donate a pound via PayPal to get Conehead an engine sorted - it's less than half a pint of beer ! Just a thought.....but if enough of us sign up for it we will have a mobile, happy, and blatting Conehead.... :-) James

Its a nice thought James but I could moan just as much! Having had two engines fail and now waiting (sorned) to save up for all the bits for zetec conversion. I wouldn't expect the forum to cough up though. The point is that I am sure that all of us would like a bit extra cash to upgrade etc. so where would it end? I do think you get "nice chap of the day" award though.

it was just a thought - I got robbed at my premises in January and lost 40 chainsaws, 12 climbing kits, chipper, lorry and £8k of property damage - would have gone under but for the fact that all my "competitors" in the tree business either gave me saws/kit and staff OR did my work for me............ saved my firm, my house and everything..... since then i've tried to do a little bit every day - and if lots of people do a bit it can mean a Lot..... i noticed that 2,500 odd views of one thread..... I just hate seeing a westy owner so up against it.... Cheers Meakin - hope to meet up on the road soon.... jJames

LOL, cheers! Nice to hear about your competitors helping you and you're right, a little from a lot of people goes a long way. It is sad for Conehead certainly, but as has been said, once its been sorted it will work out in the end. We all go through rough patches with these kinds of cars. My first kit had a spell of trouble and then was fantastic I'm sure this one is just the same. I think the best advice on this thread has been to leave it for a while then come back to it.

Look forward to meeting you on the road too.

Thanks but I dont want anyones spare cash, not trying to seem ungrateful at all as it is a very nice gesture. I hope once I get my new gaskets and put the engine back together and in the vibration is where i think it is ( in the venturi's ) I will then consider selling the car. It will be a shame as it has improved no end over the last 9 months

I have one more issue now which I need to figure out.

The oil leak, I thought it was the sump gasket failed but I have now changed it and the leak is still there.

It is an interesting leak though as not consistant, I drove the car 5 miles to football yesterday and after 1 and a half hours moved the car with no oil leak showing. I got home and low and behold it was there again.

Now I think about it this has been consistant before I changed the sump gasket. The car does not seem to be breathing like it use to, if at all! I run a dry sump system and have checked the breather tubes and find it difficult to see how they are blocked?

So if this rules that out how do I have an intermitant leak?

CH, do you have a catch tank? The breather system should go back into the ds tank and then out to a catch tank. I've seen ds tanks with the breather pipe hanging down to the lower chassis rail. The underside of the car was covered in a film of oil.

It's quite possible to be a breather pipe venting down the rear of the engine. It wouldn't have any oil running out when cold but would as the internal pressure built up and the oil becomes thinner.

So, first thing is to check all the breather pipes to see if any are venting to the atmosphere.

so has the bottom end fixed itself then??

one minute the engine is dead and everyone thinks how unlucky you are....again..

now you've just driven it 10miles and worrying about oil leaks... without telling us if the death rattle is still there or how it been fixed?

The South Wales Area has a meeting in the Otter in Newbridge on Wednesday evening next week (26th). Within the members that are planned to turn up there is a massive collective of knowledge regarding our vehicles.

Come along and let's get our heads together to see if we can identify the best way forward for you.

Prior to instaling the Corsa engine in my car it had a reasonably fit X-Flow producing approx 150 BHP and ran in the road going class in the Speed Series. This engine gave me approx 7000 miles of trouble free use befoe I sold it on. So X-Flows can be robust and reliable we just need to figure out what we need to do with yours.

Best regards.

I though I did, sorry if not it was venturi's loosein the carbs.

Yes I do and it is not leaking. I haven't seen the breather venting for a while

I'm not going to risk going anywhere in it with a oil issue and blowing another engine.

I think you should go to the meeting anyway, even if you can't take the Westie. You need some moral support, and ideally some practical mechanical help. At least meet the guys in your neck of the woods who may be able to help you, and are clearly willing to do so. :t-up: :t-up:
