Martin Keene Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I hate selling cars and bikes privately, the internet has made everybody wary of being ripped off. I've got the Moto Guzzi up for sale, today somebody came to look at it, listened to it run, etc and made me an offer which I accepted. I printed two what car receipts, we filled them out, he signed them, he has left a 25% deposit and has agreed to pay the balance by bank transfer. All he had from me is an address, sort code and account number. So why do I still feel like there is a scam hiding somewhere just because he didn't look like the kind of guy you'd expect to buy this kind of bike. Has he paid with funny money? Is he going to empty my account just from the sortcode and account number? etc Sad reflection of modern life. Quote
Ciprian Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Or maybe we are all getting a bit paranoid? We.ve not see your buyer, so cant comment on that. People say im not the kind of guy to own a Westfield, but i do. Just my point of view. Interested to see what happens next. Quote
Norman Verona Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 He cannot gain access to your bank account with the account number and sort code. You spent years sending out cheques with that information on it (plus your signature) and didn't give it a thought. Pay the cash in tomorrow and when the money arrives in your bank by EFT let him have the bike. I've had a wife for 44 years and people say I'm not the sort to keep anything, other than cars, for that long. takes all sorts. Quote
Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Should be fine. At least you have met him at your home and he has given you a BIG deposit. The guy sounds serious, all sorts of people riding bikes these days. On the scam radar where 10 is a definate scam, this one sounds about 0.1 :d Quote
Norman Verona Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 HM just reminded me that we used to give our credit cards to a waiter who took it away and brought it back in a machine with some paper in it. How many times were there two sets of paper in the machine which we signed and never noticed the double charge. Quote
Martin Keene Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 Completely irrational I know, spent years giving cheques out without giving it a second thought, but these days paranoia sets in and you are convinced everybody is up to something some how. As for what a 25 year living in Romford wants a cafe racer for is anybody's guess... Quote

Leftfield Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 OOOOOHHHHHHH I like Guzzi cafe racers, got any pictures of that? I sold 2 sets of motocross boots on ebay last week. One guy was local and wanted to pick them up. He thought I was a scammer cos I didnt want anyone at my home, been there with guys coming back later to liberate my bikes. I took the boots to him and ended up selling him selling him more gear. Quote
Martin Keene Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 http://forum.wscc.co...l__moto%20guzzi Predictable enough, like any project, if I was to do it again it would be different. The rear section of frame would have been cut off and a loop added to it, the tail fairing would have not been cut around the mudguard, and would have covered the new rear frame loop, there would then be a bracket welded to the new rear frame loop to mount the tail light and indicatiors. But I would have cut the seat fairing to allow fitting of the factory side panels, the alloy ones seemed like a good idea because the replicate (ish) the V7 Racer, however, in reality they don't look as good as I'd hoped.
