Bear in mind this was very obviously in the USA, the only country on earth with more guns than people, 1.2 for every man, woman and child. I'd say as a woman in a country like that carrying one in your handbag might actually be a sensible and justifiable thing. Owning one does not make it dangerous or promote violence, using one maybe. It's like saying you can't have a knife to carve your Sunday roast in case you cut yourself or stab someone.
