Simon225 Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Thans to all the guys wo gave advice last time re 'how and what to use to get a site going' Well, my wife has designed her site, registered her domain name... ****.co.uk, but when we type www etc we go to the uk2.net site which tells us our domain name has been registered (by my wife) but doesnt go to her site. If we put the name in a search engine and then click on the result then we go to our website...but it starts ... https://sites.google.com/site What are we doing wrong....dont forget me and the wife may be stupid, so dont forget the obvious stuff! Tom Frankland (T3OMF) Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 So, at the moment you can get to ***.co.uk but You can't get to www.***.co.uk Some Domain companies you have to change the "www." and ".co.uk" with there DNS pages Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 What company is hosting the site and did you use the same company to register the domain name? Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 If i understand what your saying then typing the web adress is taking you to the Site of the company where you bought the name and not to your website??? Therefore it sounds like you may not have set or incorrectly set the DNS forwarding that tells the domain name company where the website is being hosted. Quote
Simon225 Posted August 14, 2012 Author Posted August 14, 2012 thats quick...just as we expected from the top crew at wscc! Site was setup/designed at google. Domain name bought from UK2.net When I logon to the domain name company it looks like you have to buy access to the dns setting? Quote
Norman Verona Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Yes, you have to purchase DNS from UK2. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Yes, at it's most basic level you just buy a name. You're not doing anything with it, just keeping it from anyone else, or keeping it for future use. In order to make use of it, the domain name you've bought must be configured on name servers around the world to point at the actual web site address where the pages are located. The DNS services that you're being offered should do this, if its a self managed service, typically you'll have a "control panel" web page at the host - UK2.net in your case. Where you enter the web address that your purchased name points at. There may well be other settings too and possibly email management facility's for the domain name too. If its a managed service, then it may just be a case of filling in a form so that they can configure the name servers for you. Quote
Norman Verona Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 It's a control panel and, Email is extra, but not much. The panel looks like this: Name servers ultra103.uk2.net ultra104.uk2.net Change nameservers Zone Mail (0) mx.*****************. @ nn.nnn.nnn.nnn www nn.nnn.nnn.nnn * frenchblat.com ftp nn.nnn.nnn.nnn localhost nnn.n.n.n mail mail.********************************************** news news.uk2.net smtp smtp.uk2.net This is version 2010113020. Simon225 Posted August 15, 2012 Author Posted August 15, 2012 Thanks to you all, I will make the purchase tonight and have a play.....dont be supprised if I have to ask some more basic questions. It's the wife thats stupid...not me!......She wanted the website...I would have been happily ignorant of the technology...but then again I wouldnt have been able to ask the question if it wasnt for the internet.
