westy turbo Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Planning of doing the engine bay under tray with either some "big" left overs of carbon sheets that i have but not sure what should i cover or not.....,engine is on dry sump, Thanks in advance Quote
Kevin Jones Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Pretty sure I lost a shed load of heat by removing the small bit of under tray I had, went from marginal water & air (via intercooler) cooling doing a single lap to overcooling both. I need to add some back but I will be doing it in small bits and checking the impact after each bit. Quote
Norman Verona Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Just a theory but if you left a NACA type duct at the rear end of the undertray it should suck the heat out. You would need to cover the gearbox and where the undertray of the engine meets the gearbox tray leave a gap of 20-30 mm with an overlap of about the same. Theory is the gap will create a vacuum which will extract the air from the engine bay. Remember, it's theory only. Quote
westy turbo Posted July 27, 2012 Author Posted July 27, 2012 Thanks guys,so gear box going to be covered too..+ leaving the gap that Norman mention, Now if i go even further and cover the whole rear/diff should i leave the tunnel gap too in addition with the rear diffuser ? Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Just be prepared to spend some time sorting heat issues out. I can't remember, but I've a feeling you've already got flared side panels on the engine bay? That will obviously help. One of the other issues that seems to plague some, (though it doesn't seem to affect all) is the hot air ths then forced down the tunnel, from the engine bay. It has been known to cause a big rise in cabin temps, particularly if you don't have carpets. IIRC Caterham, who've suffered similar issues with the bigger powered CSR's have added extra "closing" panels in the engine bay to reduce the air flow into the tunnel. Some owners have also added the self adhesive thermal blanket to the panels to try and reduce the heat transfer into the cockpit. Quote
Norman Verona Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Mine suffers from the engine heat being transferred down the tunnel. Leaving Le Mans many years ago on a Sunday we were stuck in the exit traffic. The car was running at well over 100c. I felt down the gear lever and burnt my finger. Burnt as in a blister! I wrapped the whole of the tunnel in heat reflective material after that. Now I have a NACA type vent at the rear edge of the bonnet which has helped. Quote
westy turbo Posted July 27, 2012 Author Posted July 27, 2012 Thanks again for your inputs! Yeah,do have the sides flared, and having the adhesive thermal blanket in my hands to chop some pieces, just need some cash to get the diffuser, having the bigest and most powerfull spal fan on its size might help, but from what i get its mostly for racing which makes sense to suffer while standing.
