a4gom Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Anyone got any experience of these cheapo tablets that are on the market / suggest a half decent one. We were looking for something for our youngest for his birthday (10), he does loads of reading so a kindle was suggested. I've seen plenty of ad's for tablets around the same price (e.g.) and thought that if they were any good it may be more appropriate, you can download the kindle app to them so he can read his books but would also be able to listen to music, play games, surf the net etc etc.. I'm not expecting or looking for ipad quality just thought there was a bit more to it than a straight ebook reader so he would get a bit more from it. As usual any advice gratefully received about what I should be looking for spec wise, places to get them / deals.. Andy Quote

Kevin Jones Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Google Nexus 7 has had some good reviews, but might be hard to get hold of for a few weeks yet. Quote
bhouse Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Tablets - whether Android or Apple - are very versatile but for reading I'd go for the Kindle every time. Huge battery life and a great screen that you can even read in full daylight. At £89 I reckon it's a bargain. Brian Quote
Norman Verona Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Problem with kindle and its clones is the availability of the books I read. I check 10 books from my book case and none where available. Quote
Meakin Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I would hold back on Kindle at the moment as the nook glow is coming and that will shake up that industry. My guess will be it will be released in this country just before christmas, which in shops terms is about two months . WHSmith are selling a very cheap e-reader KOBO which gets good reviews reads pdfs and there are plenty of books available in that format. With a 10 year old I would question whether a e-reader is suitable as they will probably want ipad style tablet pretty soon and the e-reader will then sit on the shelf untouched. Hope that helps Paul Quote
a4gom Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 Thanks guys, I have a kindle and the battery life is fantastic for me, however I have just been looking and I'm not convinced the books are out there for his age group yet. At 10 i don't think he needs those tablets yet Lord benny! He hasn't asked for either the kindle or a tablet, it was just a thought. Perhaps we'll leave it a bit and see what develops. He's still on calpol Mark! Quote
