Couple More Questions From A Noob...(With Pics!)

Well a week or so into owning the duratec engined beast below and I'm super happy... got a couple of questions and an issue though!

Ok so first off, I've fitted some polycarb wind deflectors which seem to make a big improvement on keeping the missus happy,

but question is, what do people use to stop them rubbing on the bodywork? It looks to me like they will rub on the bottom edges.

secondly, can anyone identify this oil filler cap? Presumbly there should be some kind of magic tool to get the thing off?

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I've spotted a few drips of oil on the drive. Ive jacked her up and underneath the manifold side seems pretty clean, but the inlet manifold side of the engine is a bit oily underneath. I appreciate small oil leaks tend to get everywhere, but are there any particular areas that are prone to leaking on the duratec than I can investigate first?

Thanks for you help guys

Re the wind deflectors, mine were supplied with little rubber stick on pads. The supplier said I could get more from B & Q, called hi-fi feet.

I stuck mine to the body, but I've seen others stuck to the deflectors which I think is better. I've also seen people just using some rubber trim on the lower edges.

Thanks Gadgetman, didnt think of that! I'm not sure I have an allen key big enough!

Good idea Doug - I think they might look better stuck to the body, I think they are too thin to stick to the deflectors properly.

Hey - Where do you get the deflectors? and also, can anyone point me in the direction of the side mirror supplier? Kinda missing mirrors atm :-)

Lovely car btw :-)

My rubber feet were like half balls not flat IYSWIM

My deflectors, and they look very similar, came off ebay from kenilworth. A chap called steve. £57 I think

Re wind deflectors. I've found that whatever I use along the edge of the deflector, it still rubs a little. Best I've found is to stick something to the body work so the deflectors rub against it. It's no problem to remove, even if there is a little sticky stuff left on the tub, a light dusting of white spirit will remove.

Big old dome sticky pads from B&Q with a little slit cut into them to seat the deflector work best.

Yup, I've had to make cuts in mine to stop the wind pushing them off. But it seems to work well now.

Cheers guys. I've ordered some of those of ebay.

Any idea on the likely oil leak locations?

Sorry, not a Durabang owner, so can't help with specifics on that one!

Only thing I can suggest is to check the "usual" suspects. Camshaft oil seals at the front of the head, rocker cover gasket, obviously that'll run all the way round and so on. Also check around where breather pipes connect to the cam cover.

It's worth bearing in mind that a small dribble of oil may not go vertically down from where it's leaking, they can have an annoying habit of traveling sideways along joints and webs in the castings.

Can be handy to go over the engine with some cleaner and get it as oil free as possible, so that the next time it leaks, it stands out better.

I know some engines that collect oil in the induction system, air filter housing etc. due to internal breathers, VW and Renaults for two. Duratecs I don't know much about.

If that were my car (and very nice it is too)...

I'd be taking the coolant expansion tank off the scuttle, filling it with a diswasher (or washing) tablet and some boiling water to get rid of that horrid brown scum that's on the inside then flushing it out with clean water and putting it back on the car as it'll look so much nicer - all IMHO of course ;)

Re oil leaks - check the dipstick tube where it goes into the sump. Assuming it's the same as mine, there's an o-ring that's supposed to seal it and doesn't do it very well. It's a bu$$er to get a replacement that fits too. Mine's covered in a length of fuel hose secured by jubilee clips.

My Duratec has covered around 18,000 miles and that's the only leak I've had.

Cheers, Matt

For the wind deflectors I have a couple of small rubber plugs that are riveted on, I have not used them though as I want to be sure I place them correctly.

For the moment I have some edging strip on the bottom of the deflector and have some duct tape (in a matching colour) on the car where the edging touches. It seems to be doing a find job or protection. Once I am sure where they touch I will use the rubber plugs.
