Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Like a few others I am looking at maybe ditching the ao48/r888 for road use as I just dont seem to get many miles out of them at all - plus with my Wales trip not forgotten and the current wettest summer ever in mind something a little safer in standing water would be beneficial ok so I want to stick to a 205 60 13 but cannot find much selection what type are you using? XTR2Turbo Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 There was a chap on the wales hoon very pleased with his T1Rs. Certainly went well in the wet. What about the Dunlops that the rally boys love? What compound R888 are you running? I got 3000 miles out of a set and they were still good until I shredded them at Alconbury Quote
Pistol Pete Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 If you're not doing track days with them then consider yok 21r or a539 works for me for road & track. Quote
ibbo Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 im using falcons on the road and so far very pleased with them car feels much better in a straight line than it did on my trackday tyres doesnt wander so much on poor road surface mine are fitted to a bussa powered car and have plenty of grip on the road unless you are really silly with it .i have another set of rims with trackday tyres for just that Quote
JustCallMeMac Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Another shout for Yoko A021R's for the road. Swapped to them to save my A048s for the track Try George Polley Motorsport http://www.polleymotorsport.co.uk/polley/index.asp Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 Polley is just up the road for me - will ring them as it does not say sizes available on their site Got a little while before my ao48's are down to the wear bars @David - I am going through 1 to maybe nearly two sets a year for road use - maybe I should just simply alter my driving style naa Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Have a look at Hankook Ventus RS2 Z212 Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Perhaps the answer is a more wet weather set such as T1R for the road and a sticky set such as Khumho or Toyo 888 for the track Quote
Bananaman Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Toyo R1R's are a good alternative but unfortunatley they don't do them in 13"... A set of 195/50R15's can be had for £300, good VFM if you got some 15" rims Quote
ptownsin Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 +1 for the R1Rs. I was boating down the standing water on the M4 recently, so they stand up to water, and mine lasted 2 years including an Alconbury drift day and Cottesmore. All depends if you could bear to go back to 15s Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Never had the confidence in the wet, on public roads that R1R's give before, have been caught in some horrendous conditions and they just seem to cut through and bite. Not sure I'd want to be following anyone using a set though, as the rooster tails they can generate as they clear vast swathes of water from the road are quite impressive. I'm curious how they compare to an A021R, (if I've got that right?), for wet grip. Quote
rocket_rabbit Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 How did the R1Rs stack up on track? I have 15s on and should probably just get some 13s with slicks for the track. R888s are seemingly daft prices now at £550 a set for 15s. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 My thought exactly; why bother with R888's if it's a dry track, just get a set of second hand slicks. * *this is what I'd rather do on my own car, not intended as advice for others, I've already got a dry sump, so, suspension settings aside,, running slicks isn't a major operation. Martin Keene Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 If you after a decent set of road tyres, consider A021R in 185/70 x 13. Similar profile to what you have got now so speedo calibration and ride height won't change significantly, but they are dirt cheap because they are a control tyre for some kind of short oval series. Quote
Norman Verona Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 martin would they be dirt cheap because it's dirt track racing? Quote
