Dodgey Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Well after taking nearly three months to sell my 911 I grabbed a Westy to try out the experience :-) http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4040530.htm What a laugh. It's a totally new experience. The engine is lumpy and poppy below 2-3k but after that it zings . I've taken her up to 8k so far. I gather they are good for 8.5 but not sure. The previous owner has the red line marker set at 7.5k. A very "direct" driving experience :-) bl**dy mental more like, and it all seems to happen between 0 and 60 ish. I drove her 2 hours back home and I'm very glad i took ear plugs! One question, from the pictures, can you tell what type of roll bar it is? I want to buy a "roll back" "half roof" from Westfield Softbits so i can have a roof with me at all times, but identifying the roll bar is nesc. Oh - actually, another question. Where the bonnet meets the body on the side - the longest horizontal bit - the "flat" - that tends to wear a bit and reveal the original yellow underneath. I thought I'd run a thin black strip of "something" along this lip/edge to protect it. Any suggestions what to use? Quote
Young Pretender Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Not sure what roll bar it is actually. Doesn't look like an RAC or Playskool one. You can get foam protector tape to line the bonnet areas that you talk of. I've just re-done mine. Try Merlin Motorsport or Europa. Oh and congrats. Looks like a lovely car, and a nice engine! Quote
GreigM Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Very nice looking motor - love the color....nice to see a westie which isn't yellow/red/green! Rollbar looks like an "RAC" style bar to me, but maybe someone else will confirm. My car has some stick-on foam padding to stop the rubbing - something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3m-Black-Single-Sided-Foam-Tape-20mm-Wide-x-6mm-Thick-/270841212241?pt=UK_Crafts_Cardmaking_Scrapbooking_Glue_Tape_EH&hash=item3f0f64ed51 Quote
Ciprian Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 deosnt look like a rac roll bar but similar. probably best to have a word with softbitsforsevens and see what they say about the sizes. Quote

AJKOK1 Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Looks a really nice car. Like others, i do like the colour. Congrats and i hope you enjoy her !! Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 looks like a smaller section tube than the RAC roll bar (although that me be the colour) it also does not appear to have rose jointed rear stays might be a home made or a custom built bespoke job from a cage/roll bar specialist - job to tell TBH as others have said love the colour and they are supposed to be a cracking engine Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Real pretty looking car, congratulations. The bar proportions, height, corner radii etc look wrong for an RAC bar, (even one of the rarer weld in versions). Most likely a custom one off, made to a more useful height, which would also explain what looks like it might be a bespoke one-odd hood. Quote
Dodgey Posted July 11, 2012 Author Posted July 11, 2012 Thanks - she's a blast! - I inspected the roll bar - the rear most bars go all the way down to the chassis, at lower numberplate level (best I could tell without lifting the car up). I've emailed pictures and dimensions to Softbits, so we'll see. Got caught in the rain today and just put the roof on without the doors, far less cramped! The engine is a very new experience to me. It's very lumpy low down, loads of popping , cracking and overrun, but when you go towards 3.5k and onwards it smooths out howls. I take her to 7.5 k ish at the moment. The previous owner mentioned that the carbs may "have more to give" - I guess he meant it could do with a tune up. No idea really. He did mention he fiddled with a "thing" attached to both carbs on a braided hose that is supposed to control the fuel pressure. He said it caused problems, with the car cutting out on right turns! So he put it back to where he found it. The long and the short of it is I might find someone in the Taunton/Somerset area to give her a tune up / balance etc. Currently finding the grip extremes, tentatively, then looking forward to a track day asap! :-) Quote

robo1968 Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Nice car...and finally, another car that has a tan leather dash and interior like mine! - Although I've always liked it, to be honest I was almost embarrassed to admit I had such a thing as it didn't seem to be a very 'Westfield' thing to have But now I can come out and be proud! Could maybe be a BMS engineering roll bar as they do coloured versions... Quote
