Here is the video of when me and the old man when to France.

Iv tried cutting it down to as short as possible however most of the pictures just cant be rushed.

One word for the Somme...AMAIZING!

If any of you have ever been then you will know what I am talking about.

I also think we should organzie a WSCC trip to the Somme... whats everybodies thoughts on this?

Great video, well done.

I would be up for a similar trip in a flash - what a trip.

If we could raise funds for a worthy charity like The Royal British Legion, Combat Stress and Help for Heroes it would be all the better for all of US to raise money for all of THEM who serve us.

Hey, better still - if you have a spare seat - take an ex-serviceman with you for the ride of his life.... :)

Cheers, James

Thanks guys :) was a great trip and will be remembered by both father and son for many years to come.

A trip to raise money for a charity sounds an excellent idea!

Kirky, have you heard THIS SONG Sorry, that link doesn't work, Try this: http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Rock-'n'-Roll-lyrics-Dropkick-Murphys/FED6134657279C7748256FEF000C5F41

Either download it or get a copy. The best version I've heard is by a friend of mine, an Irish landlord in Sheffield, who stood up at a charity gig I was running and sang a cappella. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.

Ok, give up that doesn't work.

Here are the lyrics:

Green Fields Of France

Well, how do you do, Private William McBride,

Do you mind if I sit down here by your graveside?

And rest for awhile in the warm summer sun,

I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done.

And I see by your gravestone you were only 19

When you joined the glorious fallen in 1916,

Well, I hope you died quick and I hope you died clean

Or, Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene?

Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the pipes lowly?

Did the rifles fir o'er you as they lowered you down?

Did the bugles sound The Last Post in chorus?

Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?

And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind

In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined?

And, though you died back in 1916,

To that loyal heart are you forever 19?

Or are you a stranger without even a name,

Forever enshrined behind some glass pane,

In an old photograph, torn and tattered and stained,

And fading to yellow in a brown leather frame?

The sun's shining down on these green fields of France;

The warm wind blows gently, and the red poppies dance.

The trenches have vanished long under the plow;

No gas and no barbed wire, no guns firing now.

But here in this graveyard that's still No Man's Land

The countless white crosses in mute witness stand

To man's blind indifference to his fellow man.

And a whole generation who were butchered and damned.

And I can't help but wonder, no Willie McBride,

Do all those who lie here know why they died?

Did you really believe them when they told you "The Cause?"

Did you really believe that this war would end wars?

Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame

The killing, the dying, it was all done in vain,

For Willie McBride, it all happened again,

And again, and again, and again, and again.

William McBrides grave is on the Somme battlefields in a little vilage called Authiulle.

Me and my Dad visitied it last year when we went. WIlliam Mcbride is burried in a very small and peaceful cemetry, which is sloped and leads down to the River Ancre.

The song (many different titles such as green fields of france, william mcbride etc etc) is an old favorite of ours. We both play guitar and sing and it is a common tune that we do.

WIlliam Mcbride was infact 21 not 19 howver Eric Bogle changed his age so it would rhyme...nice little fact which isn't well known

Dan, we belonged to a folk club in Sheffield and there were several people who had their versions.

I had a feeling you'd know it.

The video and music are so complementary.

After watching it I had a tear in my eye. Really powerful. In fact I have watched it 3 times now..

My father passed away just over a year ago and trips like this are to be remembered forever.. I have taken my son on a few trips, but nothing like that apart from Le Mans, but need to do a few other road trips.

Once again, super work.

On a slightly different note, what are the two pieces of music?

Fraser.
