Google Chrome - Lost My Profile!

Recommended Posts

Anyone seen it laying around.

Chrome says I've lost my profile. Read how to re-install but it doesn't do what it says on the tin screen.

These are the instructions:

Windows instructions

  1. Exit Google Chrome completely.
  2. Go to the Start menu > Run.
  3. Enter one of the following directories in the text field, then press OK.
    • Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\
    • Windows Vista/ Windows 7: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\

[*]Locate the folder called "Default" in the directory window that opens and rename it as "Backup default."

[*]Try opening Google Chrome again. A new "Default" folder is automatically created as you start using the browser.

However I do not get a directory window but an invite to "open with"

Any suggestions?

Use Firefox.

Don't like it. I like Chrome partly because it has an online translator. It's also "clean" and simple - just like me.

I have Firefox on my Android phone (Motorola Atrix) and it's crap. Constantly losing its way and getting in a mix up. It also just uses cache so it appears quick but need constant refresh. I know it's not the same as the pc version which I've used but just don't like it.

I did get on OK with IE but gave up with the version that removed the ability to default to Google.

Can't get on with Chrome at all. Layouts come up totally different and text boxes and photos placed on screen incorrectly, not comfortable with the interface, just flat unimpressed with it.

IE9 - meh.

Safari isn't too bad, I can get on with that OK.

Horses, courses, etc.

I've got IE running at 125% and Chrome at 110%. They look exactly the same except Chrome is slightly smaller. Chrome at 125% is larger but a little of the ends are cut off.

You should be able to just navigate to that folder using Windows Explorer, On Windows 7 the path is:

Computer > local disk (probably C:) > Users > YOUR USER NAME > App data > Local > Google > Chrome > User Data

(Similar path in other flavours of Windows after you've found the YOUR USER NAME directory.)

You'll find the 'Default' directory in that User Data folder.

Good luck!

I got a message on screen today that Google is closing down in the near future, Asking me to try Google Chrome.

Thanks Brian but there is no "app data" in the user name folder. I do have Windows 7.

It sounds as if your computer is set up to not display hidden folders.

Open an Explorer view and see if you have a menu at the top with options for File, Edit, View, Tools, Help.

If not, click on Organize then select Layout and tick the box next to menu bar.

The menu bar will then appear.

Click 'Tools' on the menu bar then 'Folder Options'.

About 6 rows down there's an option relating to hidden files and folders.

Click to select 'Show hidden files, folders and drives'.

Then click the button towards the top of the dialogue box saying 'Apply to Folders'.

If you now go back to the USER NAME folder the APP DATA folder should now be revealed.

That was it, thanks Brian.

Amazing what you forget in 6 years of retirement. Mind you I've never got into windows being a Pickie. (Pick O/S). Didn't the hidden files option used to be in the profile?

No idea - but it used to be much easier to find! Glad it's sorted.

Well, I keep getting told by my son that the main feature of Windows is its consistency.

Yes, consistently different between revisions.
