Dibby Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I wouldn't go overboard TBH, a bloke round here had his garage done over recently. Bars at the window, nice strong door. They took a Stihl saw to the blockwork wall and cut themselves a new door. Even wiring it up to the mains won't deter them, at work we've lost live cables as thick as your arm for the copper. If they want the car, they'll take it one way or another - removable wheel, kill switch or not. One of those Defenders Nick posted to deter the casual scrotebag but nothing will stop the determined and well prepared car theif ... that's what insurance is for. Quote
Norman Verona Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Dibby, agreed. But a Westfield isn't the sort of car a "determined or well prepared car thief" would be interested in. Unless its' got a Cossie Turbo engine....... Quote
Dibby Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 20 minutes work sawing through a wall for a £10k car? Nice work if you can get it. The garage I was telling you about wasn't for a car, it was for tools, about £10k's worth. With the local gyppos round here, they'd put that amount of effort in just to steal the fuel from the tank. Norman Verona Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 But the average car thief wouldn't bother. it's, as you say, the professional, who would be cutting through walls to get a Range Rover (or £10,000 of tools). Most Twoc's are left abandoned or burnt out on moorland or wooded areas. Suppose we'd better agree to disagree. Quote
Dibby Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I agree your average car theif wouldn't bother. It's not the sort of thing you could put on fake plates and drive about without being noticed like a Range Rover. A Westie would be stolen to order by a professional to be stripped for parts. Quote
Norman Verona Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Most "stolen to order" vehicles are taken abroad, a lot to eastern European countries and some to north Africa. Maybe we should start a thread "who's had their Westfield stolen". The majority of twoc's are corsa/saxo type cars. Genuine thefts are a small minority of "stolen" cars What we are agreed on is that a determined thief will break into any building, no matter how many locks and alarms you install. However, "the determined thief" won't waste his time cutting holes in walls with Stihl saws unless he thinks there's something worth stealing inside. Quote
Dibby Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Oh aye, by far the biggest number is the Corsa/ Fiesta/ easy to nick with a screwdriver so some scrote can razz about a housing estate. But Dombanks isn't protecting a Saxo, he's protecting his Westie. i think the chain arond the chasis is a good idea and maybe the post into the ground wouldnt be too difficult with some fence post concrete type things. Dom, if you're looking for something to chain to, I've used these on the bikes, had to sell the last one with the house. OK, chisel a few bricks out and it will come out but enough to deter the casual theif. LINK But then if your casual toerag manages to get that far and can't have the car away he'll probably torch it for a laugh. Quote
Dave the Sparky Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Most "stolen to order" vehicles are taken abroad, a lot to eastern European countries and some to north Africa. Maybe we should start a thread "who's had their Westfield stolen" Out of interest has this happened to many members over the years? I would think Westys are a very unlikely target to all but a few thieves? Vandals maybe. Lots of door kicking in the night and taking front windows out to get your keys up our way, even car jacking last year in the more affluent. One of my customers had his new Vogue and wife's new X3 taken in the night whilst they slept, first thing they new police were in their bedroom waking them, luckily keys were easy to find, they caught the Rangy, a 12 and 15 year old on board. The X3 never been found... Dave Quote
brindle Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Fit a couple of sound bombs linked to the alarm, if they get past the other security, they will be deafened within 15 seconds!! http://www.diy-alarms.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=151 Quote
frubpato? Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 The side bolts are ok but all they do (from experience is push the centre of the door in and the side bolts come out of their housings . For me the ground anchor/post inside the door and a key bolt through the door into it - even if they get the door open they wont be able to take the car out - I just have to remember to take the post out before reversing the car out of the garage - Doh!
