Bob Green Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Hi all This is so off-thread but I am hoping some guru out there can assist. So, you upgrade one thing which inevitably leads to upgrading something else to get the best out of your first upgrade. Sound familiar? I have recently upgraded my Canon 350D camera for a 7D and have to say I am over the moon with it. The only issue I have is that I can download my images to the PC but sadly, cannot download to my DVD recorder. The reason being the 350D images are 3mb whereas the images from the 7D are 8-9mb, too large for the DVD recorder. I am guessing the way around this is to have some sort of media player that is capable of downloading the images from the 7D then allowing playback through the television via an HDMI cable. My question is, what would be the best gizmo to use? Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Please note I am the guy who struggles to upload web based images to the Boardroom, such are my IT technical skills, so please don’t make the answer too complicated. Quote
Norman Verona Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Bob, do they have to be that big? Why not reduce the size and see what they look like. I reduce mine and can't really see any difference, Unless you have a huge TV, of course. Quote
Bob Green Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Hi Norm I trust you and Lynne are keeping well. Yes, I can change the image settings but the only setting the DVD player accepts is 3mb. As I don't wish to take the original image at a lesser setting than the camera is capabable of, I really need a device that will accept and playback 8-9mb. Quote
Norman Verona Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Morning Bob, Thanks for asking, we're both well. You can take full fat photos and then reduce the size of the image using various programmes. I use VSO image re-sizer, it's very easy, can leave your original image as it is and create a copy which is smaller (say 3mb). There will be many others on the web, some free. You probably have at least one on your PC as many editing stuff has reduction software. The megapixel size of a photo need only be as large as the viewing media. Someone will be along soon who can say above which size a photo is wasted on a HD TV, I'm pretty sure 9 mb is more than you need to view on a TV. Quote
jak Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Bob, What TV have you got? My Samsung has USB ports that I can connect my camera to using a USB. Quote
Bob Green Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Hi Norm Thanks for that, I may give it a go but I will still need a media gizmo for less faffing about and I am also thinking of networking my PC from upstairs to the lounge in that I can download my music along with other images on to it to listen / view in the lounge. Hi Jak I have a Philips television that incorporates a USB but it cannot read the camera. Quote
peterg Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Have you tried from a USB multi-card reader? or copy the files to a USB stick and try that? Are you shooting in RAW + JPG? it maybe that the TV cant cope with RAW files as they need a converter for some devices to handle them. I'm lucky in that my Sony smart TV is connected to the internet via an in-built wireless connection and allows me to view my Picasa account files no matter how big (Canon 40D) Quote
Bob Green Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Hi Peter I cannot upload the images from a USB stick or images burnt on a DVD and all images are in JPG only. I still believe the way forward is some sort of media thingy. Quote
jak Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Bob, My TV is connected to my network via built in wireless, but the Samsung app (allshare) for viewing photos/videos/music is a bit flakey. Just set up an old laptop, I'll use theTV as a monitor and a wireless keyboard and mouse to control it. Just need to get video and audio cables for it and I'm good to go. Quote
Blatman Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Hey Bob... what TV is it? I need the model number so I can look at the instruction manual. My gut reaction is if it has a USB port then it should be able to read whatever is on the USB drive you shove in there. I cannot upload the images from a USB stick It may be that you need to change the source on the TV by pressing the Source button on the remote. The option for a media thingy (a media player is I think what you mean) depends on what you have in the house already. But lets start with what the TV's built in USB can handle, and whether your TV has any built in networking capabilities like Jak's and Pete's... Quote
Bob Green Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Hi Blatman It is good to hear from you again (which makes me think I have something I haven't answered.............. will check). Like all organised people, I thought I could lay my hands on the manual and indeed I could. Sadly, they are the manuals written in 350,000 different languages except English!!! Christ knows where the English one is but I am pretty confident it is one of these I have resized the 7D images to 3mb on a Flash drive (how I.T. am I) but the TV or DVD cannot read them. However, when the Flash drive is loaded with images from the 350D, both TV and DVD can read. Yes, a media player is, I guess what I mean as I would like to see images and hear music from the PC in the spare bedroom but lets (meaning me) go one step at a time. Quote
MrG Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 I use an AppleTV... works great, and will display anything on your TV that exists in iTunes running on your computer (over a wireless network)... however, that depends on whether you already use Apple products or not. If not, then AppleTV is probably not your best option. There are other options that don't rely on Apple products (or iTunes) that are probably simpler (and cheaper), but as I don't have them I can't recommend or comment on them. Quote
Blatman Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 First we need to see if we can work out what's different about the images from the 350D compared to the 7D. I'm 99% certain it is nothing to do with the size of the image. A TV with a USB connection is going to be more than man enough to handle a still image regardless of the size. Bob, the images from the 350D are listed as .jpg or .jpeg images, yes? Is it the same for the 7D images? On your PC, are they opened by the same program when you click on the images? I'll have a read of the destructions in the meanwhile. Phillips support page for this TV is here... Yes, a media player is, I guess what I mean as I would like to see images and hear music from the PC in the spare bedroom but lets (meaning me) go one step at a time. We can definitely sort that out reasonably easily too. Check your email... Quote
