As it happens I have just been readig a book called "Go Like Hell"

It chronicals the lead up to the '66 Le Mans and the race it's self .

The 1,2,3 MK2 GT40 finish was a farce.

The win was gifted to Bruce McLaren even though Ken Miles qualified first and had led most of the way.

Because Mclaren had qualified slower than Miles he had started about 20 feet further back on the grid.

When Leo Beebe, Don Frey and Caroll Shelby agreed that the GT40's should cross the line together they didn't appreciate the implications and by the time the last driver change had taken place it was too late.

Miles deserved the win but the "Suites" took it away from him.

The Shelby MK2 GT40's took 1st and 2nd, the Holman and Moody GT40 took 3rd.

Miles was to race in the '67 Le Mans but on the 17th August 1966 he was killed testing a Ford "J Car".

He never got the Le mans Victiry he deserved.

Chaz

Thanks for the heads up, all recorded now.

For anyone that didn't watch/record it, there's a repeat on Monday at 11.25pm.

Great programme. Did not know about Shelby's heart problems, I suppose this was before they could do bypass surgery (like i've had).

Ken Miles was a tank commander as well! What a bloke.

I lived in Thames Ditton in the early 60s and we could hear them running the Cobras up the A3 in the early hours. About the only thing in the vicinity louder than my brother's TR3A.

Legend has it that it was the Cobras using the new M1 for testing that led to the national speed limit being introduced. Nonsense of course but a good legend.

Shelby was a greatly underrated driver if he could mix it with the likes of Moss, Musso, Castelloti, Fangio and co

I'm not so sure it is nonsense; I remember it well. It was common knowledge at the time. I may be wrong of course!!

I thought it was Aston Martin proir to a Le Mans. I can remember a 'Brockbank' cartoon with pits alongside the M1!!

For all I know, it may have been Aston Martin as well, but it was definitely Jack Sears driving a works Cobra that people were talking about in the incident I am recalling (not so clearly now!) and if memory serves me correct, a question was raised in the house of Commons about it.

It was certainly Cobra that caused the modern day speed limit, I used to live in Northampton, and was aware of people that were witnesses or involved in it
