Captain Colonial Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 My next door neighbour's daughter is a very talented degree-level graduate artist, busy mum of two (three if you count her hubby), and a thoroughly nice young lady to boot. She's worked in a number of different art disciplines and mediums, and has her work exhibited in art galleries as well - clever lass! Anyway, her hubby has a business repairing exotics and supercars, so she decided to do some portraits of the cars that came through the workshop, using wood and burning the image into it. She did six different ones (mainly Porsches but others too) and hung them in the customers waiting area to decorate the place and give it a touch more class. Every one of them was so good that they stayed on the walls for less than a week before the customers whose cars they were had bought them - bear in mind she wasn't planning on selling any of them to start with. I was so impressed with her work that I commissioned her to do "The Wench" for me using a photo similar to this (minus the badge): on an A3-size piece of wood and frame it. I saw a photo of the rough outline a few weeks ago and was very impressed, but she's finished it now (including the number plate to make it unique and really special) and I will get the finished art from her at the end of the month. As you can imagine, I'm pretty chuffed and can't wait! I'll post up a photo of the completed artwork when I get it, but I might bring it along to Stoneleigh if anyone is interested in seeing it and maybe commissioning her as well (I get nothing from this at all, nothing to do with me, I'd just give you her business card and you can discuss it with her). For the moment, I'm a bit like a kid at Christmas, can't wait! Quote
Dibby Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Sounds good, post a picture of the finished work Quote
Norman Verona Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Scott, bring it to Stoneleigh. Bring plenty of her cards and hey presto. HM commissioned a local artist to paint my 7 outside the house for my 50th Birthday. The houses and lane are very good but the car not brilliant. Suppose it takes a special talent to get a car right, We have 2 artist friends here and Jacop is threatening to paint the car - with me in it! Quote
Captain Colonial Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 We have 2 artist friends here and Jacop is threatening to paint the car - with me in it! I'm assuming you mean paint a portrait of the car while you're sitting in it, rather than painting the car itself and you at the same time! Quote
Terry Everall Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Dulux non drip gloss gives a good finish Quote
Captain Colonial Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 Dulux non drip gloss gives a good finish But does Norman need primer and sanding between coats? Quote
Norman Verona Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Probably, but I think I'm too rough for that. Maybe a plane might smooth me down. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Well, I got it today, and who said Mondays were the worst day of the week? Well chuffed! (Sorry about the photo, rubbish camera, the vertical line is in the photo but NOT on the artwork - click on photo for bigger version) Just for reference, it's 620mm wide x 500mm high. The photo really doesn't do it justice at all, but I will have it at Stoneleigh if you'd like a closer look and her cards as well if you'd like to commission her to do one of your favourite car. As I said, I get nothing out of this at all, nothing to do with me, but I'm so pleased with it that I thought someone else might want one as well or as something for your loved ones to consider for your birthday or Christmas. (Or PM me if you're not going to Stoneleigh and want her contact details.) Anyway, very happy camper today! Quote
Pistol Pete Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 At least we can read you registration mark now, i'll go and get some plates made up for roadtrip ;-) Looks good in the picture, however I would imagine it looks much more impressive in the flesh. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 It is indeed more impressive, you don't get the three-dimensional feel of it from the photo. When you think the whole thing was done by burning the image into the wood, the definition, shading and detail really shows off her talent. Early birthday pressie for me, now have to find the best place in the house to show it off! Quote
